Question Loss of fine throttle control under light acceleration

I have a 2005 tl. See if you can follow me here...

Say the car has a throttle response of 1 to 10... With 10 being maximum acceleration and 1 being the slightest touch of the gas, then it's like my car has lost the ability to accelerate on the "1" or "2" speeds.

Every time I go from a standstill, it's impossible to get a smooth start. You always go from stopped--to enough acceleration (a "3" on my scale) to where you have to use the muscles in your neck to keep your head from lurching backwards.

This also manifests at highway speeds. If you are trying to maintain 65 on a flat road... you either find yourself coasting with no gas, our you can feel the car actively accelerating... There is no in between where you can just remain slightly pushing on the gas and maintaining your speed.

Regular acceleration... Like getting up to posted speeds... Is completely fine.

There are no computer codes on the dash.

I've complained about it twice to my Acura dealership. They test drive it, but claim that they can't detect it. Truth be told this problem doesn't happen _every_ time I drive it...but about 95% of the time it does. When it's in this "mode" of having the problem with acceleration, then it does it every time you accelerate for the remainder of that drive. If you happen go for a drive and get one of the 5% of the times the car actually behaves right...then it will behave and accelerate correctly for the rest of that drive.

Tried googling for it.. No luck

It most certainly is there and happening. Passengers comment on my driving "skills" at getting up to speed smoothly.

Anybody have any idea where to look?

Thanks in advance.

I'd start with the APP sensor. It's a pretty simple job. (CLICK LINK BELOW)

Thank you for the rapid response.

I'm not all that gifted when it comes to fixing cars...but after reading up on what APP sensor does...it certainly seems like a really possible candidate for what's wrong.

I see the comments about inspecting and making sure that the throttle cable doesn't have too much play in it as well. I'll check that out tomorrow morning.

Is there some way I can actually test the sensor or somehow determine if it's bad or not? Or do I have to just buy a new one and replace it to determine if that's indeed the problem? It seems like a pretty straightforward job to do...but I'm trying to avoid replacing things until I get the part that is truly the problem.

I'd bet all the money in my wallet the app sensor is your issue by the symptoms you describe. This is very common among the TL's, mine included. It literally takes 10 minutes to change the sensor. And 3 of the 10 minutes is used up finding the ratchet. Below is the cheapest I could find for an oem one.

Figure out if you can reproduce the throttle issue at a speed fast enough that cruise control can be engaged. If engaging cruise eliminates the issue, I would say the APP sensor is where to start.

My '05 was nearly impossible to drive smoothly for several months since like you I had no 1 or 2, but it jumped to 3 or 4 which made 1st gear very challenging.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

I think that is indeed the culprit.

I googled for that part number...and actually I came up with
Amazon having the cheapest price for the OEM Amazon having the cheapest price for the OEM
...including free Prime 2 day shipping!

Thank you for taking the time!

Talking Fixed!

I just got done changing the APP sensor as well as tightening up the cable tension a little bit and I am happy to report the problem has been fixed!

Thank you to everyone who gave their input. This forum rocks!

Sorry, came in late to this thread.

Don't mean to throw a wet blanket, but it could have been as simple as having the battery disconnected that fixed the issue. That would have been my first recommendation...

At any rate, glad it's working for you.
