I have a 2005 TL M/T. I was driving and there was a loud bang at the back of the car. I pulled over and investigated - found the trunk lid was very heavy to open.
I suspected the one of the spring bars is broken. My old 1996 TL snapped the same bar after 5-6 years of service.
Anyone has a diagram to identify the part number of the spring bar (I know there are 2 bars - just want to make sure I order the correct one). Also, any idea how to take all the padding off around the subwoofer area without damaging the padding?

take it to the dealer and don't touch anything! Those spring bars have a whole lot of tension on them. If one snapped that means the other ones has double the tension. I've seen broken hands because of some people trying to pry the bars out by themselves!

Now that i've given you a fair warning, here is a diagram of the springs:


also there are two springs available, the heavy duty ones that are put on when the Rear wing is put on, or the regualar ones the car comes with.

Also have you checked any of the surrounding areas to make sure that it's not the trunk springs?

I have not been able to take the padding apart to inspect the actual damage. However, I have a 1996 TL before and the same damage happened on the 96 model.
When I "tabbed" the padding under the subwoofer, I could hear a loose metal bouncing around. This leads me to believe I have a broken "spring rod" part #10 or #11.
Which part number is the trunk spring?
Also, do you have a diagram or instruction on how to take down the padding under the subwoofer so I can inspect the damage?
