Looking to buy used TL

Hey there, new to the group. I currently own a 2004 Acura TL, she made it to 487,000KMS(302,000Miles) and even with regular maintenance, the transmission is shot. May she R.I.P.

Anyways, I’m looking at buying another 2004 TL but I have some questions. It has 195,000KMS(121,000Miles) and I was curious if it’s worth it? Car is up for $4000CAD($3100USD) , has leather(small rip in drivers seat), sunroof, Nav system, and is in decent shape, couple paint chips on front bumper..

It's very difficult to say whether the 2004 you're considering is worth the money, or for that matter, whether your money would be better spent converting your current TL to the AV6 transmission. If you do a little cross shopping in your area you'll be better able to formulate an opinion about the relative values of each.

FWIW, I suspect you'll be able to buy a relatively low mileage AV6 transmission (i.e. a transmission from an Accord V6 from the 2006-2007 model years; a transmission which is significantly upgraded over the unit which came in your car, but otherwise a bolt-in swap) for well under $1,000 CDN.

Awesome, thanks for the information.. I'll definitely keep that in mind when investigating further. As the engine(even though well maintained) is at almost 1/2 a million kilometers, I'd rather look at information reguarding purchasing another 3rd Generation TL, as i can swap all the new parts from my previous one to the new one. (Replaced front axle, new radiator, new front end (tie rods, control arms, bushings)

^provided that you've changed the oil and never let the engine over heat or sucked up water...it's still good. it's still very good.
swap the tranny for an AV6 one.

The beauty of the J30, J32, and J35 series motors is a half-million miles (i.e. 800,000 km) is easily obtainable for a reasonably well maintained motor.

The thing is, some TLs with 150,000 km on the clock are beat to death and have numerous niggling little issue which can be expensive to trace and fix, while other TLs with over 300,000 km on the clock are well maintained and had owners who got out in front of small issues as they developed. I say this to suggest, if your TL is in otherwise fully operable condition, fix/replace the tranny, if not, maybe the car with the lower miles will serve you better. In many ways, this boils down to the devil you know.
