Leaky Gas

Hi guys,
I dont know where else to turn.

I just picked up my 08 TL white on the 17th of january. when i full my tank it leaks all over the floor.
i have taken it back to the dealership and they kept it over the weekend and gave me a loner. today they said nothing is wronge with it.
my questions to the tlrs are
1. Does any one know the laws are as to the respect to lemons
2. Does any one know what this is so i can advise this dealership what is wronge so i dont accidently blow up on he highway when some guy throughs away his cigerett.

questions u may ask.
did it over flow @ the end? nodid a regular fill and waited for it to stop. I looked for the overage but there was none. just the gas chasing my feet @ the pump.
thank you in advance guys.

Dominic

Ah, something EXTREMELY wrong there (missed something during the build). Let us know how Acura takes care of you. If there is ANY fuel smell after their fix, I would INSIST on a new car.

Call Acura Client Services. This is a significant safety issue and in no way, shape or form, normal.

Take it back to the dealership (or better yet, call TLC and have them tow it to the dealership - refuse to drive it due to safety concerns). Refuse acceptance of the reparied car until they can show a normal fill and auto pump shut off does not leak.

Don't know about lemons in Canada. In the States it's usually something like 3 visits to fix the same problem or a total of X days (~30) out of service in the first year.

How many times has this happened? Sounds like just once.

Go to a different service station and fill your tank. See what happens. Sometimes the pumps shutoff, but with a slight delay that will cause it to overflow. This has happened to me a few times. Pump shutoffs do go bad.

This happened on my TSX.
The problem was I keep on going to the same pump at the same station. I tried a different pump at the same station and there were no more leaks.
Fill up a couple more times and see if it still happens.
Could be the car, could be the pump.
Does it leak when the tank is full and the pump doesn't shut off? Or does it leak even when you are filling it when the tank is empty?

Hi guys
thank you again for the questions..

1. How many times has this happened? Sounds like just once
Actually filled it up twice. but i did not wait till it got to half( did not think it would make a diierence) but did the same thing on both fulls.

2. Go to a different service station and fill your tank.
Well on the two fills i went to sunoco but 2 different service stations and 2 different pumps.

3.Does it leak when the tank is full and the pump doesn't shut off?
does a firt shut off and i giv a little squeeze again and its chaseing me

4.does it leak even when you are filling it when the tank is empty?
did not relly see the difference of empty or 1/4 tank.
wanted to see if i was safe.

i took some pics with my i phone will post them soon.

It looks like the filler pipe is cracked at the top of the tank. Never heard of this on an Acura, but Infiniti had such a recall on the 03' G35. The recall said something about a bad batch of filler tubes that could crack right at the tank. The problem was made worse by cold weather. I think the actual thing that cracked was the seal.

But that's exactly what the symptom was... Filling the tank would result in spillage of gasoline on the ground.

What is this picture showing us? I know it's the fuel cap inside the door, but what's the point that you're making with this pic?

Now does it happen after its full, you get some gas that starts dripping from the underside of the car? If thats what you're worried about then its nothing. Basically the tank has like an overflow line which releases the gas under the car rather than have it spew all over the body... My truck does this. Nothing to worry about, just dont fill after the first stop

when you twist the lid, did you twist it until you heard clicks? if you did and its still leaking, it maybe the tube that is going towards to tank itself. i say do what ACS (ACURA CLIENT SERVICES) said.

This is NOT true. There is no "overflow" line connected to the outside. If your truck is leaking, the vapor line is disconnected from the tank. My old chevy did that for that reason... If there really was an "overflow" line connected to the tank in the fashion you describe, it would constantly leak fuel vapors to the atmosphere, which I believe is illegal because of emissions. That's why if you don't click your gas cap on all the way, your check engine light comes on, becuase the ECU detects a fault in the fuel-vapor recovery system. This is also why it's bad to top off your tank, becuase you can get liquid gas in your vapor lines and vapor canister, which screws up the performance of the vapor recovery system.

I believe his point was to show it was leaking gas, but it wasn't coming from where the nozzle goes into the filler neck.

ok i just droped it off.
gave me a loner.
lets see what they would do.
the service guy was very genuine and apologetic and has acknowledged that time has been wasted.

will keep you guys posted on what was the problem and how acura deals with me.

as well i did mentioned the crack in the line and the overflow mght be disconnected.

1.img 5 was to show them that i did not over flow to the cap point where they can say it was too much gas i put in.
2.when you twist the lid, did you twist it until you heard clicks? yup no problem there. the 08 clicks a bit different than my 05 though.
3.Now does it happen after its full, you get some gas that starts dripping from the underside of the car? It was kinda dark and just buy judgging the puddle on the floor no way it could be a drip it was deffinately flowing out like when you fill up.

thxs again for the feedback guys and will keep you posted on the outcome.

Gasoline doesnt ignite, but the vapors do!!!

The FIRE Triangle requires 3 things
Fuel source- Combustable Material, Oxygen-(present in air), and spark- source of ignition. Put the 3 together, and fire can erupt at any time.

No cell phones at pump because if it rings it can make a spark and you go boom!!
Walking around the car, getting back in the car, can create static electricity,
especially with nylon winter jackets.
Thats why you touch the bare unpainted metal side of the pump BEFORE touching the nozzle. While the fuel was flowing- it created its own static charge looking for a path to ground- that would be YOU

Ever got out of the car and got a zap-shock from the door?
guess who is carrying static charge on them!
