Knocking from upper engine. 05 TL

I went today to Acura and they said that their is a knocking sound coming from my engine. I went there to get my transmission fluid flushed.

So the sound comes from the upper portion under the plastic that says 3.2 Liter VTEC. It's a rather constant knocking. Not extremely loud but you can notice it.

I have a 2005 Acura TL Auto.
I use Synthetic Oil
Brand New coolant.
Brand new transmission fluid.
Alignment perfect.

The service man at Acura said. I don't know the health of your engine. This made me extremely nervous. So can someone possibly give me ideas on whats going on? Thanks

There are some tests you can do to help pinpoint what it is.

Does it do it more hot or cold?

Does it get louder with rpm only (raise the rpms in park)?

Does it get louder under load (put it in gear and give it some throttle with the brakes on).

You should have the engine cover off and hood up for these tests.

Some oils like Mobil One are on the thin side of their viscosity range. Their high mileage/extended mileage oil is ok. I've run Mobil One and there was slightly more valvetrain noise.

Some noise is normal, injectors and valvetrain will always make a ticking sound.

It doesnt do it more in hot or cold. It's always the same.

It doesnt get louder under load. You can't hear it when the RPM's are high.

I use a Synthetic Mobil Oil Filter with another sort of Synthetic oil.. But I forget the name at the moment.

I think it may be the valves, BUT it bothers me that the service man would say that, even though it could be something THAT simple. If so can I adjust the valves myself?

Why do you use synthetic oil? 2x$$
Only RDX requires synthetic oil

Why not??? First of all these are high quality cars, why not use the best????
Better cold starting protection, Better high temperature protection, the oil does not break down as easy, Does not sludge up as easy, can go much longer in between oil changes, has detergents to clean the engine and keep it clean, should i keep going? Over all synthetic is a much better oil, and for the price will pay for its self just with the added benefits.

Raise the RPMS to 1K, does it increase? Have the dealer check the belt tensioner since those can be a common cause for noise.

Actually here is a video of my car with the sound. It's in HD so you can hear exactly what it sounds like. And yes when I rev it up it begins to go faster, but as it goes up higher in the RPM's it gets more and more unnoticeable. None the less here is is idling.

Go here and watch in HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48Z9GOooBSg

PS: Does everyone like my painted letters on the Engine? haha. I did it myself. Looks stock when you see it up close.

I go to my dealership where I have the warranty on Friday either way. I bought it at Toyota. But I get all my services like oil changes at Acura. I only use Toyota when something goes wrong, because the warranty is there.. I have a 3 year 33,000 mile warranty and I've owned it since December 5th. Haha. I bought it with 72,000 miles.
Now I have 78,000 miles.

I'm thinking you need a valve adjustment, like someone previously stated.

I've realized as of lately the RPM's seem to be going a little higher than usual. It's could be my head playing tricks though. And YES it does go with how high the RPM's go.

i know what it is possiable

1. one of the cam lobes are pitted or
2. while its running, put a finger on each coil pack. i bet the coil pack will feel like it is ticking hard. the spark plug came loose and exhaust gas is trying to come out the coil or
3. the t-belt tentionor has gone bad.

put your finger on one of the back coils one at a time while running.

Sounds like you hurt a piston from the video but you say it doesn't get worse with load. Let's hope it's a severe valvetrain problem. It's definately time for a compression/leakdown test. I've even had a severely blown headgasket sound like that.

Does it have a miss?

If you pull the oil fill cap while it's idling, does a lot of air blow out?

What happens when the car goes into vtec?

Do both the compression and leakdown as one may leave out things the other will catch.

There are no misses. But the RPM's seem to go up a little higher than usual I noticed.

There is not a bit of Air blow out from the oil fill cap. So thats no the issue.

When the car goes into VTEC it does it's usual, Vroom. hah.

I brought it to my Toyota dealer because that is where I have my warranty, and he said that I may have to go to Acura and they will take it apart and see what the problem is.

And if someone can give me a paper to print out that has all the recalls on my vehicle I'd appreciate it. Thanks everyone.

Did you ever figure out what was wrong with the knocking noise in ur TL? its funny cuz i have the same TL as you 05 in SSM and i have the same knocking noise coming from my engine but its only got 35000 miles on mine. i just had the transmission changed because the first one just died on me and since then ive been having problems with my car. Im taking it to acura in the next hour so ill post what they told me. just wanted to know if you figured out what the problem is.

Hi, I believe is your unibelt tensioner I have the same problem in the past
the only way to verify is not a valve problem.
1. Take the belt out
2. Start the car for few second the engine will run with no problems the belt function is
to turn the power steering and alternator plus the water pump
Then you will find if is valve problem or belt tensioner
LR.

well..mine has a similar problem as well..though mine is not that bad..mine comes from the belt side too..and mine gets worse under a load..like when you put it in gear and start to pull forward..you can hear it making that tick tick tick sound..

when just in neutral...u can even notice it,until you rev the throttle a bit..

my mechanic said its either the tensioner or my main bearing..

then again im running SC...and he seems to think that if it's the tensioner going, this might have caused the timing belt to jump or skip a tooth..and i could possibly have a bent valve

is it easy to adjust the tensioner or can you tell by pulling off the belt and cover by looking at it..

if so..then this is a fairly easy fix...if not..im in trouble too

took the car to the acura dealer to have them check it out...turn out to be the tensioner was going bad which is weird at 35000 miles, they replaced it under warranty and there is no noise anymore.

Yeah and my TL is STILL making this knocking sound like in the video. I plan to have a meeting with the Toyota Manager about all the damn mistakes they have done with me..

They told me they would give me a call on my Knocking noise and to get that sorted out. So I went to FL and well NO call.. Dude they also sold me a TL with a back left bent rim.. I didnt realize until it was 2 months later... They are screwin up bad.. I expect to have a BIG couple of words with this guy. I will get back to you all on what the verdict on my cars sound is soon enough.

im sure its the tensioner..thats the problem on mine...gonna get mine fixed soon..
i wouldn't suggest leaving it for too long..fix it asap, as this could eventually turn to a serious problem..

So I talked to Toyota and I arranged to go to the Acura Dealership near me in Wappingers Falls to fix it. They should be able to fix this. Either way should this be a quite fix for them? hmm

Here's a little update. So some of the noise was from valves. So they fixed that for 350$ Even though my warranty says it covers valves... BUT no they have to be "broken"..Or damaged... They were frigin LOUD. Oh and 119$ to CHECK the engine in general...(Analyzation or some crud)

So Acura fixed the valves, then they said that there is still a noise when it warms up. So they said it is possibly the damn pistons going. And they said it MAY be covered but they wont know until the work is started..... So he said most likely it will be covered BUT if it isnt, it will be a whopping $700. And well my warranty company "Zureck" or something will be sending a man to see the car within 42Hours to see if it is covered or not.

This is just typical of Honda..They make such nice looking cars with lots of power and well their upscale division still doesnt know how to make a good transmission.. Even though from my knowledge MY transmission is fine, its just the thought of all the past TL trannys There is no excuse for making an upscale car the way they did. My previous car, an 02 Avalon was more reliable at 92K miles.. lol.
Still cant make reliable cars as Toyota and Lexus can..

I am just so damn stressed out and pissed over service places.. I love my TL but this is BS... I am at 79K miles...

OVERALL I now have no car for 1 week because of this. They start tomorrow.. And well I am 19 so no rental either.....21+.

Just think, I've owned this car since December 5th 2008 and look what I am into already..Lets hope this is the last of it. My liking for Honda vehicles are very low ATM.

Will update further later.

Sorry to hear. I thought it sounded like a damaged piston. Make sure they know you've always used premium gas. Be careful how you drive because eventually it's going to end up with a rod through the block.

Can you tell a difference in the noise level after they adjusted the valves?

Almost forgot, replacing a piston or pistons will be well above $700. I would expect double that.

i have a knock too....sounds like its coming from the top... im going to say i need a valve job done soon.. my tech at acura said ill be needing it sooner than later. so my guess is thats the indicator. it only occurs when its cold and when its hot n the engine had time to expand it goes away....my guess is that i have to adjust the valves cold...some guys like to do them warm....no idea why

I generally drive very normal, but of course I push it sometimes.

Why would I tell them I use premium? It requires it nontheless..

The number one killer of pistons is detonation and too low of octane is the number one cause of detonation.

When a piston lets go, the rod will whack itself into the block, the piston locates the upper portion of the rod.

The problem is that yours gets worse as it gets hot and the oil thins. Normal piston slap from excessive piston to cylinder clearance happens when everything is cold and goes away when it warms up. Something is damaged in yours.

You can pinpoint which one it is by pulling one spark plug coil at a time until the noise goes away.

Well then my warranty should cover it. The price is no big deal it is just annoying. But lets say after it is done. Will it still go through the block?

Acura will find which one it is or w.e and repair them.

I'm sure the rod is fine. Once the piston is replaced, no danger of it exiting the block.

Well I called up Acura again and asked them what was going on, they said. It was not the pistons it may well be the CAM SHAFT. He said that this was a little less extreme than the pistons.

That's good news. I've never heard a cam make that kind of noise unless it was going flat on a lobe. If so, pictures would be nice.
