I have an '04 TL 5AT, occasionally, it will not let the key OUT of the ignition. It will stop it at the accessory position. Starting the car again, putting it in drive, then back to park usually solves the issue. Unfortunately it sometimes won't come out of park, so I am forced to turn it off, turn it back on until it comes out of park, then releases the key. The park shifting issue ONLY happens when I am having issues with the lock cylinder not releasing.

My idea is that the car isn't registering that it is in park so this would point to the shift lock solenoid?? But I'm not sure why it won't come OUT of park sometimes when this happens, the brake lights still work when the problem occurs so that should rule out the brake switch under the dash.

I'm just browsing AllData and I am seeing the park pin switch too, anyone know what that does?

Have you tried turning the steering wheel?

 

My cell phone was blocking my shifter from shifting all the way into park and I could not figure out why my key wouldn't come loose.

I hope it's something minor like that. Good luck!
