A "good" exhaust valve that is sealing and holding compression will usually have white or tan colored ash deposits on it. Exhaust valves burn much hotter than the intake valves, hence the difference in color.

See, if you had paddle shifters it would have stopped you and prevented this whole mess.

And subbed for j37...

Agreed, those valves look fine as far as "color" is concerned...

Yes, the exhaust side is supossed to be white. IF you look at any properly burning motor (and I will use a turbo motor for example because its easiest), and you take the turbo off, the compressor wheel (hot side) SHOULD be white. Exhaust side sees alot higher temperatures than intake (obviously). And the burning gas and air mixture causes the discoloration.

So, just to get this straight, you being too drunk to drive your own car and then egging the guy (nice enough to be your designated driver) on to go nuts and have some fun with the car somehow makes him culpable? That's some skewed logic, my friend.

If it makes you feel any better Justin, I had a good friend destroy my engine. I was converting over to an external wastegate and since it was my daily I had to drive it whether it was functioning right or not. At this point I had plugged off the hole to the internal gate and had not had a chance to get the external welded in. There was nothing to limit boost besides my right foot.

So knowing I was going to drive it for a week like this and I couldn't race I put 87 octane in it just for driving. I had an appointment Saturday to have the wastegate installed. On Friday night I went out with a few friends. I was drinking so I let a friend drive with very specific instructions to not go more that 1/8 throttle. He pulled out in front of someone and floored it. I'm screaming to let off the gas. The car only made power for about a second. The next few seconds were popping and backfiring and horrible noises. The car didn't really accelerate. I'm jumping into the front seat to pull his leg off the throttle. He had completely frozen up and just kept his foot buried. He's a cop now lol.

The worst part was pulling the heads off thinking the headgasket was blown and finding they were fine. I found a crack in a cylinder, the block was junk. The 0-30psi boos gauge was sprung, with the engine off it still read over 5psi. It popped a hole in a silicone hose and I've run 36 psi on those hoses before so I can only guess boost was well above 40psi on 87 octane.

There was no doubt he did it as I had 2 other people in the car but be didn't offer to pay for it or even help fix it. It depends on the friendship but it's probably not worth trashing it over a car and trust me, I know your frustration and I used to have a bad temper. That same friend is a cop now 15 yrs later and has had enough speeding and exhibition of speed tickets thrown out to save my license and pay for the engine several times over

friend of mine had a supercharged Harley Davidson truck he was trying to sell with only 35k original miles... he's a wholesaler(this was his personal truck he owned for 8 years), and had a dealer he works with sell the truck for him.
One of the test drivers went out and blew his motor(salesman didn't go with said driver) and my friend had to end up replacing the motor. Half out of his pocket, half out of dealers.

Shit sucks, but at least you're talented enough to tackle this on your own. props.
car will be better than it was...one way of looking at it!

side note: i drove that Harley truck home one night, b/c my buddy was drunk.
I beat the tar out of it, b/c he was egging me on as well. I happily obliged

Looking back, I'm really glad i wasn't the one who blew his motor!!!!!!

My buddy took it a bit better when I split the block of his Mustang in half. He had bought a Novi 2000 blower and unfortunately broke his leg before he got the motor in. He put it in the car with the cast on, but couldn't drive it. It made right at 500 RWHP and we knew that was the limit of the block.

We took it to the track and kept having alternator issues in the lanes so we said ef it and went back into town to street race.

Blew past an 03 Cobra with pulley, heat exchanger and tune and when we pulled over the car cut off. Cranking it back up and it wasn't running quite right, and leaking coolant.

When he started disassembly, the block started to seperate as he loosened the intake. Split straight down the middle into two pieces. Every piston (this motor was from his Dad's old F150 with a $150 Napa rebuild kit) were in perfect shape. Not a hint of detonation at all.

500hp and a split block.... Must've been one of the Fox body 5.0s?

Yup. There was debate as to whether it was the HP that split it or just high rpm. We had the MSD set at 6300 so it's unlikely it was rpm. It's possible it wasn't a great balance job, but hey, for crap we had lying around, it was fun. It was a carquest rebuild kit (I think I said Napa earlier) with junk cast pistons. Every part except the block was reusable. He built a 436 Windsor instead of going back to a 302 based motor. That motor made 525 RWHP N/A. I can't decide which was more fun - centrifugal S/C, or big cube N/A. Both have their pros and cons. I think if we had to do it again, we'd go FI on the 436. Carbed was fast and easy, but to hell with getting 5 mpg, lol.

confident enough that the rear head is at TDC.

mounted.
I used the board to help prop the head up while I sat in the engine bay.
then it was simply lifting the head up and finding the holes.
the divot holes.
