Just when I thought I was immune.........

.........my trans is starting to slip. I think the torque converter is failing.

Earlier last week I've noticed during cold start a faint whine ( similar to a pulley bearing wearing out ) near around the transmission housing. Once car is warm noise goes away.
Car drove fine, oil level was good, no slipping, etc.

The other night im about a mile from my house and I felt some shudder, and a weird feeling I can describe as the trans up shifting twice into same gear.
If I give it gas it starts to buck a bit.
No check engine light or flashing D.

So I left it in my driveway while I think of what to do and just passed 169k miles.

It's funny this happened as I have started looking into replacing this car.
I'm leaning towards the Civic Si. HAve no clue why but its like my mind is pushing me to get one.
On the other hand, the accord sport is nice but no sun/moonroof.
Definitely next vehicle will be a honda or acura with a 6mt. However, It seems acuras line up for 2015 do not come with a manual transmission.

Now here is my dilemma. Do I fix the TL with a rebuilt trans or just trade it in as in.

The nearest dealership to me is about 15 miles away so my next and final trip in the TL will be there. ( Not before I rip my amps, and all other things from the car )

So if i fix the trans route, I have some other maintenance which needs to be done.

As far as I know, I think my car has been doing this for a year now

You feel more torque when it "upshifts" into the same gear right?

yep I do. Seems to move me back into my seat when it does.

when I had an 02 accord it would kind of do the same thing. that issue started at around 90k miles and lasted until the 140k's until some old lady ran a red light and totaled it. So I guess I got lucky on not needing to fix that one.

The problem occurred while driving in normal mode.
Didnt try driving in sport mode.

Odd part is no CEL light nor any codes logged in the ECU.
Maybe bad gas? I did fuel up maybe 30 minutes before that.

it might just be in my best interest to fix it and get rid of it.
I purchased a Pilot almost 2 years ago so I have that to lug the family around and my s4 is at my brothers shop hibernating because I want to sell it.

Anyone have opinions on the 2014-15 Civic Si?

I think I'm going to eventually get my transmission fixed also.

I already picked a place, price is $1700 cash with 1 year warranty/20k kms

Rutherford Transmission, in GTA.

I found the shop from someone who just got their transmission rebuilt by them recently.

I figured the regionals board would have a thread about where to go to get transmission rebuilt.
Turns out a member needed to rebuild their transmission and ended up getting it done by Rutherford Transmission also.

What a coincidence, so I know I'd be going there.
It makes me feel better to know some hack shop won't be working on my Acura.

I'm leaning towards that too. I just need a car right now to get me around locally.

I just went outside to move the car further to the side of my driveway.
Reverse works however, when I put it in Drive it didnt engage. I moved it over to sport mode and put in in 2nd gear and i was then able to drive it forward.

So, guess she's going to hibernate for a bit too. Until I can find a trans shop out here.

btw, I went to Paragon Honda ( I'd rather chew on a hand grenade than to buy a car there ) and sat in the Si...Does seem rather small. THe Accord sport "suits" me better I still cant get over the fact it doesnt have a sunroof. At least the sport model doesnt have one.

plus, I dont want to spend more than 25500k for the sport.
If all fails, I'll find a used 2013 tsx in 6MT.

I found this video pretty interesting. Dismantling of an Odyssey Trans and mechanic explaining what each part is and where i has failed.

Now that my trans is border line dead, I kind of want to get an idea of how it may have failed.

its almost 40min long

So I went to dealership on saturday to buy some ATF and while conversing with a tech he told me that honda issued a bulletin for all v6 model cars. When performing a drain and refill, you have to refill with 3.5 quarts of atf and not 3. This bulletin includes j32 engines.

just thought i'd might share since i've always done a drain and refill with 3 quarts.

This is strange.

When I drain the ATF, I only get about 2.5 QTZ out.

I then fill with about the same, between the range of the dip stick.
I wonder what would happen if I fill with a full QTZ over what I usually fill.

I think it depends on if you have the car jacked up on one side etc.

So these are my options.

1....$1500 for rebuilding existing trans. 6 month warranty but the shop is about 85 miles from me...Meaning I'd have to get it towed there ( insurance policy covers up to 15miles of tow...will be upgrading that soon )......

or

2. ....$2300 for rebuilding existing trans. 3 year warranty. as soon as I told him what car I had he immediately knew why i called. He then explained the work they do and since they take their time rebuilding it could take up to 2 weeks to get the car back. He left me with a great impression ( it was hard to understand Mr. Lee due to his accent ) and he asked If I could, To stop by tomorrow and we can go over the details. Plus, he'll tow the car from my home to his shop free of charge..about a 30- 40 mile trip.

at 169k miles I hope this car will yield more than 4k if I do trade it in.

Please, keep us updated.

2 weeks seems like a long time, but that's a good thing they take their time.

The shop I mentioned, you can drop the car off, and it would be ready the next day.

So I drove the car a few weeks ago to the trans shop and had Mr. Lee briefly look at it. The whole ride there the trans was acting fine. Same as my return trip home. I cleared the stored CEL code ( light on dash never came on ) and checked it again when I got home. No codes found or stored.
HE recommended that I perform a 1x3 drain and refill with redline D4 and to drive around for a bit and see if it happens again.
So maybe this is good news that maybe my OEM fluid is no good and needs to be replaced.

I ordered the Fluid so im just awaiting delivery.

Just thought I'd share a brief update.

So I finally got around to draining the fluid.
It didnt look bad. It was still sort of red and didnt have a burned smell.
The magnetic plug had some black gunk on it. About the same amount as my prior fluid changes. Nothing I immediately was concerned with.

I filled the trans with redline d4. ( also put my oem wheels back on from winter set )
I drove around maybe 4 miles and it felt fine. Then felt comfortable enough to give it more throttle. Car responded well.

Obviously i will continue to drive it. I have to go and buy engine oil for the Pilot so ill take the TL.

But first I need to wash it.
Also from it sitting for almost 2 months my brakes feel like shit. Hopefully by continuing to drive it clears.

Get a junker tranny. Get the car up and running. Don't trade in a car with such a problem.

I just had a recent experience. My transmission just ceased responding to the stick. One shop gave me 3 options: 1) Junk Yard replacement, 2) Rebuild, 3) Jasper.

A second opinion shop said, Did you check the fluid?

He replaced my radiator, which fixed my transmission problem. The transmission fluid had been pumped out in minutes after the hose that sends the tranny fluid in for cooling had broken off.

Good luck.

so i've driven a total of 251 miles and so far no slipping, flares etc.
I drove from PA to NJ and NY a couple times. Now that I think of it, maybe I should of kept it local incase of break down. Guess I got lucky.

I do notice the slight whine near the trans area. Although its lower in pitch. Perhaps whatever oem fluid I have left in there will need to be drained.
So far Ive done 1x3 fluid change. The remaining two I'll drain and fill with redline d4

500 Miles and good so far.
I drove it to an airport runway and took it up to 115 and trans didn't explode. so maybe it was dirty fluid?

From what I've read, 3k isn't out of the world.

it all ranges.

Just like when some people get the timing belt job done for over 1200, whereas I spent 160 on parts and 260 for labour for the job.

Just a little personal input from someone who had a failed tranny at around 40k, and then started having similar symptoms around 120k. I started noticing a shuddering in 3rd under light acceleration around 25mph. I remembered having a similar symptom before my first tranny failed. I went ahead and did a 3x3 Flush (with OEM Fluid), and installed a tranny cooler. Its been about 30k since, and my tranny has been shifting great and ive never seen the shudder again. I think keeping the fluid fresh and having a tranny cooler is cheap insurance for this car.

put 1k miles on the car so far after a 1x3 fluid change
I'm actually liking the improvement in shifting when using sport mode.
Guess I can attribute that to the redline d4 fluid.

Now its off to get new tires...Looking at General G-MAX AS03 and a wheel alignment.

I have another question. There are two lower mounts, guess theyre transmission mounts.
in order to swap them do i need to lower the subframe? Or would jacking up the engine allow me to glide it out?
