anybody know what this would be from? it looks reddish kind of like rust. its around the outer edges of the actual mirror

and about the only thing i can think of currently, is that the heated part of the mirror has basically overheated the glass/mirror film on the back which turn the mirror to like a nasty brownish color

fries is right. the heated part basically burns through with age and causes discoloration. Need to replace the mirror. Since you just bought the car, I would see what you can get out of the dealer. What year is it?

the same is happening to my driver's side mirror. I've been slacking on replacing it. I think some peeps just replaced the mirror, but if IIRC, they said it wasn't the easiest thing to do. (can't seem to find those threads).

Wow, those are in bad shape.
I have the same problem on my driver's side. Just a little spot on the bottom. I may just live with it. Chances are it will happen again since I tend to forget to turn the heat buttom off.

i've seen whole mirrors look like that, where it is basically unusable

Happens when you forget the switch on and over time.

ya those pics are exactly how mine look, thanks guys. i guess ill try to replace just the mirrors before i go out and spend a bunch of money on 07-08 full mirrors. and i didnt buy the car from a dealer it was a private seller so ill have to take care of it on my own. any tips on getting the old mirror off?

all you need is the glass/mirror itself, not the whole thing

and i am not quite of what year you TL is, i see 05 in the name, but then you mention 07-08 ones, so i just selected an 07

ya my car is an 05, im just gonna do the glass now, but i would eventually like to get the newer tl mirrors with the lights in them

you know they are more then likely going to have to be wired in, because the 05 probably does not have the wiring already run to the mirrors (can be a pain at times especially) to get them to work correctly

That rust thing happened with 05 TL. Dealer replaced it free. The seal in the layers of the glass loosened up allowing water to get behind the glass causing that appearance...at least that's what they told me. They could have told me it was flying pigs and I would have been fine with that since they said they'd do it free.
