After replacing the headlight switch for my 04 TL, I put the steering wheel column back together and when I went to turn onto a street at about 20mph, I felt an awful clunk noise while turning; almost as if its fighting me to turn. It felt similar to when youre breaking on ice. It also says VSA on the dashboard now. What could this be??? It is nearly undrivable at the moment.

It was the ABS wheel sensor that was completely corroded. I dissembled it and took it for a ride around turns, and problem solved. Currently I am driving without the sensor, but at least it won't grind on me (pause). This was frightening though - I was convinced this was a mechanical issue, which would be an expensive fix. Thankfully it was just the abs sensor though. However your local auto shop will not have it. You'll have to purchase the ABS wheel sensor from Honda. Hope this helps anyone who is dealing with similar symptoms.

 

Tannon, thank you for providing the follow up. Isn't coincidence grand when working on your car? Strange that a sensor would create the steering feeling that you described.

 

It was the only thing that made sense at the time. I knew that prior to the grinding, I had never hit anything that would produce such a horrifying noise/feel!
