Input Needed: Drain Plug Stripped
Hello all,
I just did my first oil change on my TL this weekend, and in doing so, discovered that the independent that the prior owner took the car too has stripped the drain plug on the oil pan!
The plug was tough to get loose, and when I went to line it back up, just about impossible to line up. When I finally got it lined up, it went in, albeit with some resistance and when I got to the point to give it another 1/4 turn or so to snug it, it slipped. So, now I have a slight drip from the drain plug, which is driving me crazy!!!
Any ideas on how to rectify this, short of dropping the front crossmember and replacing the oil pan?
Thanks,
-Ben

You have 3 options:
-Helicoil http://www.emhart.com/brands/heli-coil
-Timesert http://www.timesert.com/
-New oil pan.
The helicoil and timesert can be installed with the pan in place on the car. Basically, you're putting steel threads into the aluminum pan that's been stripped. I have a helicoil on my bike's oil pan- has been working well for years. It's also a much less expensive option.
