I-166: Weak signal range keyless entry....

Hey guys I've done a search on this topic with limited success so I thought I'd get your advice.

My signal range on my keyless entry is absoultly pathetic. I have to be within at least 10 feet of the car and sometimes it still doesnt work. There are occasions where im standing right next to the car and have to press it like 5 or 6 times to get a response. It's very frustrating..

Could this be because of a weak battery? or are there other issues that I don't know about. Thanks...

I think its a regular watch battery. open it up and see the battery model number to be sure.

agreed, they suck. once in a while i have to stand by my car and keep trying till it locks before i can walk away. then other times, i'll see the lights turn on thru the apartment window 50 yards away if i hit the button in my pocket.

it often acts like the battery is weak, but changing it doesnt help. makes the roll-down window feature worthless.

oh, and you can get the battery at any walmart, just bring a little screw driver with you and pop it open in the store to match the numbers.

My range used to be really good but it's slowly gotten worse as the battery is weakening. If you're standing right next to the car and you still have to press it multiple times, it's definitely time to get a new battery.

Replacing the fob battery did nothing for me. Replacing a failing car battery made it better for a week and then back to normal. Weird. I've walked 10' away at work and had to turn around and walk back to lock it.

I'm experiencing this as well. I'm glad I didn't bother to replace my battery. My A4 keyfob worked literally 50 yards away, for 4 years, on the same battery.

It's not always necessarily the keyfob but its susceptibility to RF interference. In big cities, there's tons of big metal buildings and there is therefore tons of radiofrequency interference. Depends on where you live.

Even with my compustar 2wss (6000 ft range, that's greater than 1 mile for you matho-phobes) in the city i'll get only about 100 ft of range at times. It's all about the interference.

And of course, change your battery as everyone has suggested.

Mine is sh*t too. 10-20 ft max and often have to press a few times for it to work. My Acura EL remote was pathetic too but not a bad as this one. I could not take it anymore so changed the battery. Still the same sh*t. Not an ounce better.

Ahhh....I guess there is no fix for it.

sucky the fobs may be, however, after the fobs finally did its job and unlock the doors from 2 inches, you realize that you are now in your tl and driving away; all is well from there...

till you have to walk away and lock your tl with the fob...

I wonder if there is a wire for the antenna we can extend. I had this problem with my garage door opener and I crimped on an extension to the antenna wire and the range improved quite a bit.

My Llumar tint installer tells me that certain metallic window tints can adversely affect remote key fob performance....

If it's not the battery then it's definitely interference as suggested. The receiver is in front of the windshield so you want good line of sight to it. Sometimes walking away ~50ft from the TL I can't get it to lock due to the cars in the parking lot blocking the signal path, but in my building I can blip it from +100 yards since I have line of sight.

Alternate issues could be the actual transmitter or receiver. Those issues will be more apparent though. If a new coin battery or reprogramming don't work on the fob, get a new one. If that doesn't work then the receiver / connection is at issue.

^ also the transmitting freq for most of these fobs is between 300-400MHz in the UHF band. So there shouldn't be much atmospheric or signal interference since the wavlength is < 3 feet, the llumar metallic tint shouldn't be an issue either since the skin depth fade is more apparent at freqs in the GHz range.

hold you key fob, right behind your lower head, right above the neck, and press the key, and you'll notice the range

The under head thing doesn't work with this car. It's crazy...sometimes it'll work from close by...sometimes from far. I've also noticed that it'll work from a certain distance, but then you will be standing the exact same spot and click a 2nd time to roll down windows and it doesn't work. Almost like it builds a charge...sends signal and then is very weak!~
