How come power steering noise appears just after timing belt job
I did a TB service at 130K KM on my 2007 TL base type, then after a few weeks, I notice there is so called whining noise when turning my wheel. I went back to the dealer who did the TB job, they checked and told me that my PS pump needs to be replaced which cost me about 500+tax. They mentioned that they tried to replace the o-ring but noise is still there. I then took my car to an independent mechanic who is familiar in Honda to check, he confirmed me that PS pump needs to be replaced. My question is how come the PS pump failed just after TB job? I did some search, it seems there are a few samples that had similar situation like me and they had to replace the PS pump eventually to fix the noise. So far beside the noise, steering is working fine. Any idea?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Hard to say - the power steering belt (aka, serpintine belt) is typically changed during the TB service, so maybe the tighter tension of a new belt caused a shift in how the seals within the power steering pump were seated? As far as age, 130K KM is within the range of when the seals start to dry out and allow air into the pump, which is likely what is causing your whining noise.
Regardless, there's really very little need to replace the pump with a new unit - the only thing that wears are a few rubber seals, and once you replace those, your unit should be as good as new. Instructions are below. This was one of my first DIY projects, and it was very easy and almost impossible to do wrong. Save yourself $500...

Hi Triax37,
Thanks for your suggestion. But my question is if it is the rubber seals wears out then there should be some sort of leaking, right? But when the hood is open, everything is pretty dry and the fluid level is normal level. In the instruction of your DIY, does your PS pump have a leak? Or you can see something web around the pump and pipe? In my case, seems everything is dry.
Thanks.

Right after my timing belt replacement AND tensioner/idler/serpentine belt replacement, my power steering was constantly whining.
When the power steering pump is removed, the lines remain connected to avoid a mess and this can tug at the inlet hose. My inlet hose became a tad loose and I noticed this the day after and tighted the hose and readjusted the clamp and the air bubble/noise stopped.
Once winter hit, I hears that noise on cold starts and eventually when turning. Winter tire grip and cold weather and the previous air bubble must have really taken a beating on this weak pumps. One of the TL's and Accord V6 "common problems". Fortunetely it is a moderately easy DIY.
If you can find a good priced pump with pulley somewhere, don't let thr dealer rip you off.
Remove serpentine belt with 14mm.
Remove inlet hose with either clamp (and then remove 10mm and take out the recalled orange o-ring to transfer) or 10mm directly.
Remove two 10mm on outlet.
using a 12mm flex head rachet wrench to get into the bolt closest to front of car as it is a tight spot to rachet into without removing side motor mount.
12mm near the rear of car comes out easily with the rachet. Pump should just come out now. PB blaster helps alot and can save you a headache. Reverse installation.
