HID Fogs Problem

Alright, my HID fogs are kind of acting funny lately. Basically my passenger side sometimes turns on and sometimes doesn't. Especially on a cold start, as soon as I get in the car the passenger side might not fire up, but after 5 mts. if I turn the switch off and back on again, it might work and if it still doesnt work, I can just try repeating the same and it eventually fires up. Very weird.

Now the person who did the wiring for me, I know did an excellent job so I'm sure there are no issues there. So the only problems I think it can be is either

1. Ballast
2. Relay (Suspect #1; used the relay wiring kit that the HID supplier gave me. I don't think its BOSCH and I don't remember if I'm using one relay per side or just one relay total.)
3. Bulb (If it was the bulb I think it would either fire or not fire that's it, so highly doubt its the bulb)

Can anyone else make any suggestions before I get under there, plus the weather is horrible for working outside now and I dont have a heated garage. I would love to link up with anyone local that has a heated garage and a jack to get this resolved before I take my decent down to Miami in 2 weeks.

try checking the wires, something might be loose. also if it was a relay problem i think both would be out unless as you stated. you relayed them separately. most kits are together i believe. you can also try switching the bulbs around to see if its the ballast.

parasitic resistance on the relay.....time for new one.....we can add a diode to control the build up of crap on the contacts on the inside of the relay

it can be the cold as well....ballasts hate cold cold weather but are made to work in them..... at times you get one that doesnt like it.

I tried searching this and could not understand what it was. The most I got was some sort of build up of crud that prevents enough current flow to the ballast from the relay. Is that correct?

Thanks George, I'll give you shout today to set it up!

Mine turns on for like 2 minutes and it turns off and the fuse is blown. I've gone through 4 fuses already. ( I bought the new smartfuses from advanced auto parts that light up red when blown) The ballasts and bulbs were bought from here: http://www.cqlight.ca/index.php?cPath=111_114

anybody have any ideas as to what are most likely to be wrong?

When I initially put my kit in my fogs strobed and then the fuse blew. I didn't have a relay.

What I did was replace the 10A fuse with a 15A fuse. I've had zero issues since. They turn on/off like the should, even when I use my brights at night.

typically the fuse for fogs is 20 amps. in your case id rather have a blown fuse than a busted electrical system

^I was thinking the same...Have you tried switching the two sides/ballasts/bulbs? Maybe you could isolate it to one of those items. But I do remember if the fuse is too low amperage wise, it won't let both fire at the same time. I'd be wary of just swapping out fuses b/c who knows if the wire harness can take it.

Raj it just happened to mine the other day the weather constantly does this to relays
get this diode from radioshack IN4001 and apply it to the coil side of the relay.... 86 and 85 but make sure ur applying it to the correct voltage direction so if u have a prob call me ill tell u what to do. i just changed my relay and put the diode to supress the spark that it creates on the inside wiht the contacts. everytime the spark occurs it rots the contacts inside....creating parasitic resistance so after a lil whiel the relay goes bad and replacement is needed.

Are you on crack? This thread is maad old and not to mention you're the one that fixed it for me at your house.. LoL. In my case you just replaced the relay and it solved the problem and I guess before the winter we'll add that diode. I feel its the cold that does this shit. But right now your fix has been good down here in FL.. cough cough.

What amperage fuse are you running? If I'm not mistaken, it's a 12.5 - 15 AMP fuse per ballast so 2 would require a 25-30AMP fuse with a 40AMP relay. Preferably get yourself a BOSCH relay. It might be easier to just buy one of those HID wiring harnesses off of eBay which are already pre-wired. And if ur really anal like me you can snip off the cheap relay they give you and upgrade it to a BOSCH relay.

This should solve ur problem almost guaranteed.

you need a relay pack, the reason why the fuse is blowing is that, when the ballasts power up, it draws alot of current exceeding the fuse rating and it pops the fuse, a good relay pack will solve the problem.
