HID fog light ignition issues

I couldn't really find anything when I searched. I know a lot of people have done the HID fog light mod, which I have just done also.

Here's my question:
I installed the kit, which the ballast is plugged into the factory headlight harness directly, and then of course, the bulb that is supplied with the kit plugs into the ballast as well.

The lights won't always ignite unless the vehicle is running.

What do you guys make of this? I know for a fact the factory wire harness has a smaller gauge wire (meaning smaller diameter, but larger gauge number).

The kit I have on my crotch rocket required a constant positive to be connected to the battery directly, and a switched positive to be tapped from the factory headlight harness to turn the ballast/igniter on.

Any insight would be great. I'm not stoked about it, since I leave my lights on 24/7. (Don't need to be flamed about that, thats just what I do ).

umm. i believe this is a problem with the Voltage drawing from the battery with the "plug and play" type of harness... whats most likely happening is that only one light is on, or none, or some type of intermittent problem like that...

i have been researching this for myself and the problem seems to be there for alot of people with the H8 fog on the TLS.

you might need to install relays or some sort. Ask a local professional shop and keep us posted on this. I was going to go purchase a plug and play kit tomorrow, but after reading a few threads tonight.. it has me worried.... please update us

I had this exactly problem. I had the driver side light turn on then it would go off and only the passenger side would go on and then both and then none. I got so frustrated with it I just took them out.

No updates yet - I just have to turn them off and on once the car is running.

BUT, if you read, on my motorcycles kit, it wasn't a 100% plug and play. You had to run a constant to the battery, and so they fire up whenever with no issues. If you can find a kit like that, I think that would certainly solve the problem.

I work at an Acura dealer, and my technician buddy can't think of any easy resolution.

Also, I blew the original 10 amp fuse and bumped it up to a 15 amp with no issues or melting (yet).

I will see what i can figure out.

yea i heard you have to bump up the fuse to 15 or 20AMP... but as for the firing thing, if you run a constant to the battery with a relay, that will solve the issue? its not a big deal, but i wany my HID's perfect....

If the kit is designed that way, I am pretty sure it would fire up. The factory harness has smaller wires than the aftermarket kits. The only thing they are used for in the kits that have to be wired to the battery, is to get the signal to turn off and on. Power is supplied from the battery, via wires that are the proper size in the kit.

BUT, all kits say they are "Plug and Play" and you really don't find out what you got until you open the box.

would be great if we could get a genius in here to maybe 'draw' us a diagram in paint on how to properly wire relays so that both will fire up immediately and properly even without the engine running..... i wanna install mine by next week

If you get the kit that requires the hardwire to the battery, no relays necessary.

I suppose they just included an already built relay.

From what I remember, this is what I bought.
2x SPDT relay (one for each ballast)
3 different colors of wires
Bunch of terimnals
electrical tape
diodes

optional:
shrink tube
solder gun

On the replay:
#30- Goes to the Positive on the HID Ballast.
#85- Goes to ground (I used battery ground).
#86- Goes to the stock Headlight Harness.
#87- Goes to the Positive of the battery. include an inline fuse between this and battery with 25amp fuse.
#87a- left open.

You'll need to use diodes but I dun remember where.

Its been almost 6 months since I did this and only two times my driver side fog will not ignite at start. But once I turn fog off then on, it works fine. Hope this helps.
