Question Hard Shifting from 3rd to 2nd, 5sp 08 TLS

Hey,

So I have 08 WDP TLS (5sp AT), with 200 miles on it now.

When I'm in traffic with speeds around 20 mph, and I let go of the gas to slow down, the car does hard down shifting, I had similar feel in my 2G. Am I suppose to feel it soo much? I don't even get a chance to press on a brake how it slows me down fast.

I thought the RL tranny in this 3G car will be smooth??! I only feel this during deceleration.

Does anyone else experience this?

the car downshifts to assist in breaking, if you feel it alot it is because you are not yet used to it, and also you may consider atf change...

I think it is super cool how when you reach your exit and lift off the gas the car slows like a stick shift, artificial heal toe lol

Don't get me wrong, I love this, but as you know in NYC, people love to tail gate, and I like my bumper the way it is

You think I should change the ATF? The car is still brand spanking new.

Your car might only have 200 mi. on it right now, but check to see when the car was originally manufactured. Some good synthetic ATF would be a great idea, IMHO, to flush the transmission. There have been numerous threads around here on how the Type-S 5AT transmission doesn't shift as smoothly as would be expected.

Hope this helps!

Wow, ok, I guess I'll be flushing the tranny. I definitely didn't expect to do this so early.

I'm not sure about synthetic, I'll stick to Honda brand.

Thanks!

FLUSH? NO NO NO!!! Do some research... You cannot flush the transmission fluid in our cars. You can only do a drain and refill.

I am currently running Amsoil and I love it!

2007 S type - I got the samething at 20 MPH. Much harsher when I first got the car. It gets better over time. It never goes away completely but less harsh after 3k miles.

Let the car break itself in. As a cautionary measure, you can take it to the dealer so you document that there is a harsh downshift. If it still persists harshly after 3k miles, have them look at it again. It will always be there as part of the design - just less harsh as the car gets used to being driven.

Ok, I thought that too, maybe it needs to break in, and if it won't go away, I'll go bug a dealer.

I just remember how my 2G TL, when doing 80mph suddenly went 2nd gear, so it brings back memories I don't want to experience again.

I've got 14K on mine, and it doesn't seem as noticeable. The transmission is doing exactly as it was designed to do. With Acura's history, I wouldn't take chances by using anything other than genuine Honda stuff. If you are that cautious about being rear ended, be glad you didn't buy the 6MT
I can see your point, though. I go to New York an average of twice a year, and leave the drivin' to the cabbies.

I will check the tranny fluid. I'm just assuming I have to break in the car.

I drive like a cabbie, lol, otherwise you will be standing still for a long long long time

FYI.. thats the grade-logic transmission.

definitely caught my attention when i got the 08 TLS... my 06 TL 5AT didnt have that.... its like the car jerks as it slows down... especially in slow moving traffic, every time you let your foot off the pedal the car jerks, then you goto press it again, it jerks again.... its normal , dont sweat it

this is exactly correct...i knew right away what the transmission was doing, and i thought to myself, how f-ing cool is this thing...its blipping the throttle on its own during downshifts...its a sporty thing, and there is nothing wrong with your car....

dont waist your money on transmission fluid when it doesnt need it...

What I've found is that if I ease off the gas slowly, the car downshifts normally. You barely notice it's there. If I let off quickly and especially if I hit the brakes right away, the downshifts are harsher and at a higher rpm. If you're on a slight decline, downshifts will be harsher. I've learned to let up on the brakes right as it makes it's first gear downshift so passengers don't feel it. I don't mean to do it most of the time but you just get used to the car and drive around some of it's quirks.

Also, there is a CONSIDERABLE difference between the 04-06 tranny and the 07+ tranny. I guess Acura/Honda said .. man, we've f*ked this up many times.. lets do something right..

at first, i didnt like the new gradelogic tranny, because of the jerking and "roughness" to it, but when you become a slightly aggressive driver, its amazing. plus, it adds to the sound effect of it all. When i slow down my 5AT TL-S, and the car decides to down shift and hold it @ higher RPM's , my car sounds like a bad-ass 6spd M5.... no joke (i have the ATLP exhaust & AEM CAI)

That would drive me freaking nuts... If I want to slow down I will use the brakes and not wear the tranny. That and it can impact mileage as well.
