Gear indicator light blinking and shift lag
Gear indicator light blinking and shift lag
'04 TL Auto 217,000kms
Hey All,
I'm new and this is my first post so hopefully I do this right. Sorry for the wall of text to follow!
I just had the tranny rebuilt a few weeks ago. When I got it back the same day, I could just tell that it wasn't right. 2nd and 3rd gears seemed really clunky to engage and there was lag between 3rd and 4th. It would cycle through all the gears but it wasn't smooth. Also, the gear indicator light would randomly start blinking. I took it back to my mechanic the next day and he ran a diagnostic on it but there were no errors that popped up, so he said to drive it for about a week and see if the issue persisted. Well, it did. I took it back about a week and a half later and I believe he replaced the gear sensor switch. After that it seemed a lot better, no blinking indicator light, gears shifted a lot more smoothly (albeit there was still a bit of jerkiness between 3nd and 3rd but I figured I was being paranoid and just getting used to new clutch plates), and the power was back.
Fast forward to today. Over the last couple weeks, it's been slowly getting worse, with the same clunky shifting, lag and it will randomly downshift, and on my commute to work this morning the gear indicator light started blinking again.
At this point I'm getting pretty chapped. I'm taking it back to my mechanic today but is there anyone that might have some insight into this?? I'm starting to feel like this issue won't ever go away, even though I've already emptied my pockets to rebuild the tranny (8 months after buying the damn thing, yay me). Help!

There's a way to get the code by shorting a pin on the OBD II system with the light blinking for transmission issues. A normal reader won't pull them up, you need the HONDA DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (HDS) to see what the exact error is. The blinking gear light is indicative of an electronic or internal parts error that the car is picking up. A normal/cheap check engine light can't even get to that part of the ECU.
A rebuild trans should have new 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs, new pressure switches (All 3 per gear), new trans internal filter, redone torque conveter, etc. Also make sure you are using Honda/Acura DW-1 transmission fluid. Can you post the invoice of what they charged you for during the rebuild?
