Funny Smell..

Hey everyone,

I have a 2004 Acura Tl and when I acclerate over 60 a funny smell comes out of the air condition. I dont know if this is normal or not, but is it something I can fix. I took it to a local car shop and the guy said it would be hard to find something that makes the smell come. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you fix it?

Thanks

Have you had the recently issued RECALL for install of new power steering hoses competed? If not call the dealer right now!!!!!!!!
Lets imagine that hose is leaking ps fluid, and the air vents is picking up the smell of it burning off the exhaust pipe-----

thats the first thing to check for

is this when you accelerate quickly at full throttle or any time like when doing 70 or 80 on the highway? As 01tl4tl posted, take it to the dealer to see if any liquids are dripping and causing that smell. Also check your cabin filter to see if it is dirty.

I have the same problem. I already have the power steering hose recall taken care of. Still have the smell. This usually happens when I cross 60 mph for the first time in the day.

is this during heavy acceleration? Are you running premium fuel?

If you mean flooring the gas - No. Moderate acceleration only
and yes always Premium gas at Costco.

it could just also depend where you are.

i.e. if you're from certain parts of Jersey (the armpit of america ), when you suddenly accelerate and you pull in some more air, the smell will eventually diffuse to the cabin.

also check when's the last time the cabin filter's been changed

that's odd, at WOT there is a sulfur smell time to time. I would have your exhaust checked for some leaks, and as well check the air filter to make sure it's clean.

Well costco gas is not on the Tier1 brand list to my knowledge.
You may be getting a lot of crud buildup in the engine and inefficient combustion residue in the exhaust
Go to any parts store and buy a 7 dollar, 16 ounce can of Seafoam- liquid engine cleaner
Put the full can into 1/2 tank of gas and drive it down.
Then Seafom- actually use Deep Creep- its seafoam in a spray can- do the intake manifold vac port so the pistons and all get clean.
Then see if the smell remains- and think about running the car on the correct brands and grade 91-or 93

Don't worry about the smell. When technicians do the power steering recall on these cars they usually cut the old hose to make it easier to get out so some fluid gets spilled. Im sure that the fluid that got on the exhaust will eventually burn off and the smell will go away.

Yes- it's a serious problem with potential underhood fires from a leaking PS hose; the recall is a safety-related recall.

The recall letters are being sent out on a staggered basis- I just received one last week, although my steering hose was just replaced.
However, since you just got the car, the change of address might not have made it to Acura. Register your car at acuraownerlink.com.

Probably mold or something in the air ducts. Check this thread for possible solutions: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/odor-ac-system-686089/.

Ill check and see for that but today I kept the AC off and i could still smell it...It actually smelled a little like smoke. I took the car to the shop the other day and the guy said that it is hard to find what wrong since it only happens when i acclerate over 80. I also took it to the acura dealership to fix the recall and along with that they checked everything out and couldnt find anything. I guess its something not serious then, but i just want to make sure before something happens...
