Fuel tank door cable needs tightening

Hello, my first post here.

I just got a 2004 TL with 43K on it. I pulled up to a gas station to discover the fuel tank door can barely be opened - the little lever to the left of the driver's seat goes all the way up without any resistance and the little pushpin holding the fuel door locked barely moves. Literally, it moves 1/16 at most. I have played with the position of the metal bracket on the fuel tank door but this is not a long term solution. Does anyone have the manual pages for this job, which I hope is trivial? Or any advice?

Thanks,
Hromit

It may just need an adjustment but you will have to look at both ends to see which one needs to be adjusted, or it could need to replace the cable, which is not trivial and required removing the rear seat and the trunk trim in addition to some parts up front.

To check for adjustment at the lever by the drivers seat, which is the easier part, check the I will try to post the scans for both the lever in the front and the fuel filler door as soon as I can.

Much appreciated

I was planning to adjust the cable on the driver's end, thanks for pointing out that the other end may need checking. But before doing anything I wanted to discuss it - thanks for looking for the relevant pages. Clymers etc don't carry the manual yet afaik.

Thanks!

Getting my tools out now. As long as this thread contains adjustments, how do I make the hand brake tighter?

Adjusting the cable was a breeze - remove the fuel-tank-door-opener cover left of the driver's seat (one screw), loosen two bolts holding the lever in place. The cable is secured with to he bracket with one of three plastic notches - mine was in the second notch. I switches the cable from notch 2 to notch 1 in the bracket and put the cover back on. Easy!
