Fuel system issues?

Fuel system issues?
Hi all,
I've searched endlessly for a fix or an answer to the problem I've been having. Friday afternoon, I took my car on a road trip. Everything had been checked, and she was in proper operating order to safely make a trip, I thought. About an hour in or so, going down the freeway about 70mph, I get a violent idle out of nowhere, no throttle response, and sputtering until it has slowed me down to idle speeds, thus cutting the engine. This happened about 6 or 7 times total, as I managed to limp it back about a half hour from home, at which point I had to have it towed back to my house. Every time it happened, my check engine light never turned on. It almost seemed like I wasn't getting enough fuel to my engine, like it had been choked dry, but I had well over half a tank. The reason I only could limp it about a half hour away, was because everytime I reached a stop light, if my revs came close or reached idle speeds, it'd cut my car off, no questions asked. So I had it towed, took our weekend trip in my gf's car, and came back today. When I went to fire up my car to see if I could begin diagnosing it, it fired up normally, idled normally, and drove normally. I drove it for about 15 minutes, but nothing strange happened. I am very confused as to what is going on. Anyone have any insight?
Thanks
