front rotor replacement help

Guys,

I searched this but this new search is terrible, i search for brakes and i get taillight threads and other garbage not close to what i need.

I'm doing my front brakes as we speak and i can't get the rotor off. do i have to remove the large nut in center of the rotor?? I have a repair manual but it says nothing about the rotor removal.

My car is a 2005 tl 6 spd.

NO!! on the big nut. Leave it be.

You have to first COMPLETLY remove the two retaining screws. If they are stuck, you can try an Impact Driver. If that doesn't work, you've got to drill them out. Make sure you drill them ALL THE WAY out - I left too much of the head on one and cracked my rotor hub trying to force it off.

Once the screws are out, the rotor may be rusted to the hub. There are two holes, opposite of each other. Use two M8 x 1.25 bolts and screw them into the holes. Screw one a few turns then the other. This will back the rotor off the hub. Like so (except makes sure the screws are removed):

Well, you don't need to do that.

See those two holes I marked. Just screw in an M8 x 1.25 bolt in each one. Give one a couple of turns of the ratchet, then give the other a couple of turns. Keep alternating back and forth, a couple of turns at a time, until the rotor breaks loose.

Screwing the bolts in will back the rotor off the hub. Easy.

thanks bearcat, that's what i thought, not to take off the spindle nut. I asked a guy i know that has a shop and he gave me the bolts to break it loose. I never had a rotor that was that stubborn, that's why i was so confused. thanks again

Can I ask what does M8 x 1.25 mean? What is the M, the 8, and the 1.25?

Thanks.

Metric bolt size.

M8 is the bolt size, 1.25 is the the thread pitch. They'll also have a number for length, like M8 x 1.25 30mm or M8 x 1.25 40mm.

Thank you Bearcat94 for this information.

I couldn't figure out why the rotors wouldn't come off, then i searched and found this post!! Thank god!

Then i was like where am i going to get 8x1.25 bolts hahah, luckily the one bolt holding the brake line on uses a 8x1.25 bolt so i just used those with great success.

Just waiting for some caliper paint to dry then i can start reinstalling.
