Question Front Bumper Repair (?)

My front bumper needs some repair. It has some small gashes here and there from the previous owner and it has been driving me crazy. Also, there is some weird bumps on the very front of the bumper that the body repair guys are telling me is where a heat gun has been used to pull dents out. This can be repaired but adds more $ to the bill. Well, I went today and finally got a couple estimates to get it fixed and re-painted. I'm getting estimates of $500+, and this is the price for me taking it off myself and bringing it to them.

I thought a fair price would be like ~300 dollars.. I guess I'm just way off on this one? Anybody on here a good paint body guy that would be willing to help out a fellow AZer?

Thanks for any info.. just feel like I'm getting the rip from the local body shops that just don't want to mess with a non-insurance job.

Pictures... notice the gashes in the bumper and also the weird outward denting across the front.. it might be somewhat hard to see, but that's a good angle to see it and it's directly above the "acura" in the bumper.

$500 is not unreasonable for a repaint. i've had many a quote for my poor TL's rear bumper. the insurance job was $955 (at what was once a high end shop...it still is, long story). quote at another high end shop for a sand and respray $600. brand new bumper and repaint about $700.

a respray for the tailgate panel on an MDX about $600-800. so...for your front bumper respray with corrections/repair...for $500...not bad. really it comes down to the person doing the work and making sure it comes out right. if you find someone that can hook you up for less than that then...you're golden

Nexson does great work.
maybe he can chime in on what needs to be done on your bumper so that you can be armed with that info and take it to a competent shop

Hey Justnspace, thanks for mentioning me so I can get a heads up and help others out =)

The bumpers has some high spots I see that will take some work to get back flat. Essentially it needs to be heated back up, then pushed back into place, then sprayed with compressed air to get it to cool and stay in place. The problem is that we do not know what is under the bumper. There could be alot of bondo under there. There is nothing wrong with using filler on a bumper, just as long as it is a flexible filler. $500 is not unreasonable for a body shop. Since I do this on the side, my price is often lower, to get the job and keep the flow of jobs every other weekend.

My best advice, honestly, is to buy a new bumper cover and have it painted. A body shop will charge you less to paint a new bumper. With a new bumper you do not have to worry about those high spots coming back once your car sits in the sun, nor do you have to worry about reactions of new paint and old paint. And finally, you will not have three coats of paint, equallying bigger chips. Find the best price on a bumper cover and have it painted.

Just for ball park. I would charge around $375 to fix the bumper or $200 to spray a new one.

Hope this helps!!

That's really what I figured I was going to have to do. Even with the cheaper option of $375, that is still ~$100 less than to just have a brand new bumper cover and to get it painted.

I appreciate your input and advice. I will keep you in mind if I need any type of work like that.... I'm in Florida as well.

Sometimes spending a little more will save you in the long run. Paint is something that can make you very happy or something that can bother you forever
