Found ATF Leak Culprit - Now how to fix?

Hey,

For a while now I've been having a ATF leak over by the driver side's tire.

Finally had time to jack up my car and take a look underneath.

From the last thread I made about it, people said it was right by the 3rd gear pressure switch. So I removed the small black cover covering the area, which revealed much more.

I wiped off the excess ATF from the leak.

Far out pic to show general area:

Area:

Now I don't know WTF I'm looking at, but it seems to me that the leak is coming from the area I marked in red.

How the hell do I tighten this thing to close the gap which in turn stops the leak? =P

Thanks!

Also, is this normally how high the ebrake goes?
I had to REALLY struggle to even get it that high...

I was just looking at this pic:

and wow, my leak isn't coming from the 3rd gear pressure switch...

My leak is the area behind the black shroud on the bottom right.

How did you find out about this leak in the first place? Was your transmission acting funny?

Nah, my transmission doesn't act funny at all *knock on wood*

This is how I discovered it:

Bingo!

It sucks! I can't even park in my driveway because I just got it nicely done and sealed up (looks sweet) lol and I don't want the ATF leaking to ruin it.

Everytime I have to park inside the garage (I do so everytime anyways) or park infront of my house. When I wash my car or do work on it in the driveway I have to take a big piece of cardboard and put it underneath.

I'd be taking her to the dealer. My transmission was leaking, only discovered it when I went to change the fluid and saw the bottom of it was wet...turned out the pipe where the dipstick sits was broken.

Dealer was my last option lol

Don't want a job that shouldn't cost too much to turn out $100+ =P

That cover shrouds the position sensor. There is an o-ring there you can replace. Before effing around with it, you should verify the filter cover and banjo fitting aren't the real culprits. Also check both pressure switches, the ATF can blow back making it look like there are several areas where the leak is originating from.

On top of the case below the battery tray (above your suspected leak area)

hey tyler sorry i can't answer your question regarding the ATF leak, but i can answer your question about the e-brake.

it seems as if your e-brake has erectile dysfunction

here's mines for reference.

the only thing i can think of is

1. since my car is a 08, i'm just randomly assuming that earlier TLs handbrakes only go just as high as yours does
2. you aren't engaging it hard enough (but your post said you had to really struggle to get it that high.... so idk )

When I engage my e-brake i put the car in park, press the brake pedal in, click in the silver/grey button on the e-brake, and pull that fucker up hard til it doesn't go up any further than i let go of the grey/silver button and it locks in place.

you know you did it right if you pull up the e-brake and you don't hear any noise at all.

if you pull the e-brake without holding the silver/grey button down you will here little clicks indicating that it's getting locked in place.

Just an update:

I can confirm that it's not leaking from the filter area.

I rubbed my hand around the area and didn't pick up any ATF (it was dirty and greasy though lol)

After checking out in the engine bay, I jacked up my car again and took a look underneath again.

All I can say is WTF. I did wipe it last night and look how much there is!

I don't think it's anywhere near the 3rd gear pressure switch. I rubbed my hands around there and didn't pick up ATF lol

@vietxquangstah: Maybe I have to adjust it or something lol because it should definitely go up higher.
I just recently got in the habit of using my parking brake everytime I park (to save wear on the transmission?) so maybe its not used to being used lol

Mine is similar to yours, maybe a click or two higher, if at all. Mine is not like vietxquangstah's.

There is an e-brake shoe adjustment on the rear rotor hub (driver side??). It's a "click-wheel" thing.

IIRC, you supposed to pull the lever up for between 6 - 10 clicks and it should be fully locked. There is an adjustment procedure here:

D-041: Brakes-front/rear caliper overhaul, front/rear pad replacement, brake bleeding, brake disc specifications, parking brake adjustment

Thanks for the tip!

Man - with TWO HANDS I can only get it to go up like 3 or 4 clicks!
Just not right lol

I don't know if it fully locks or anything but it the car doesn't lunge when shifting to park and shifting out of park =)

Another update:

Okay so I wiped the area clean.

Then took this shot like 10 minutes after:

As you can see, the shiny thing in the gap is ATF creeping out.

Then I took this pic 45 minutes later:

I outlined the "path" of the ATF. Everything outside the red outline is dry.
It still seems like it comes out from the same little gap. What I'd like to know is, what is this gap and how do I tighten it?!?!

btw there is an adjustment in the center console for the parking brake. just stick a 12mm deep socket in. if you want to adjust it A LOT then you use the star adjuster inside the rear drums.

I've never tinkered around with the trans switch sensor. At minimum, put it in neutral, raise the wheel and remove transmission range switch .. then remove the sensor. You should be able to replace the o-ring at this point. But if you deem it too nerve racking.. take it in.

It shouldn't be expensive (< $200). Argue that nothing needs replacement and if they tell you you need a new trans.. respond by laughing outrageously (think mr. crabs / aka justn) and say "were you going to take me out back or bend me over the table first?" then promptly drive away.
