Hey guys, just a quick question. I noticed recently that when i'm heading onto the highway and i open up the throttle 75%, once i start coasting i get this rotten egg smell coming through the vents?! I know the smell to be sulphor and it happens to my cousins older car due to the rich mixture but is this normal for an 06 TL? I have been noticing this problem more frequently and its starting to irritate me!

usually the rotten egg smell means coolant is leaking onto something that is burning it up. I would have it checked out asap

coolant does not smell like rotten eggs

rotten egg smell if from the engine running rich, which would throw gas into the exhaust. this happens alot when you floor the car

could be the clutch warming up, as he mentioned he is at 75% throttle (i.e. revving high) so that could just be the clutch. coolant has a sweet scent to it.

Yeah that's not normal. I have an '06 Auto with 11k miles and I can WOT from a stop light, merging onto a highway, or anything else with no bad smells. Better get that checked out.

There Is A Rotten Egg Smell Coming From The Exhaust:
Whenever you run the engine and are not moving, you notice an awful smell from the exhaust. The smell is like that of rotten eggs. Not only do you notice this, so does everyone around your car. You may also have noticed that your gas mileage has been worse lately.

Possible causes:

There is a problem with your electronic engine control system: Scan injection and emission control system for Diagnostic Trouble codes. Replace or repair as required.

The ignition timing may be set wrong: Check and adjust ignition timing.

Your fuel pressure regulator is bad: Replace the fuel pressure regulator.

The engine may have mechanical problems: Check vacuum lines and fittings for leaks. Check engine compression. Check for broken fittings and mounts.

The engine is running too hot: Check cooling system, thermostat and cooling fanes for proper operation.

Well the rotten egg smell is coming from the catalytic converter, the smell is a release of built up hydrogen sulfide from the reaction of organic sulfur compounds in the gasoline with the catalyst in the converter. Almost all gasoline contains some amount of organic sulfur compounds, and the amount varies by region. The more sulfur there is in the gasoline, the more hydrogen sulfide is built up and released by the catalytic converter, so the stronger smell! There is nothing wrong with your vehicle otherwise if there are no DTC's set, or nothing is damaged seriously or broken! So with you getting on the throttle this clears your catalytic converter of some hydrogen sulfide which causes the smell! For people in California they shouldnt have this smell as much because low sulfur gasoline is required by law and should make its was across the U.S. thoughout 2004-2006.

road_boy, I have the same thing happening to me. Only really noticed it the last few or so months. I think it's the winter gas, but don't know what you guy get in the GWN. I smell it for awhile after puching it. All of the smell should behind me, not it the cabin with me.

I think xx06 might be right. But I'm going to get it checked out.

Anybody else...

Well i found my answer from a honda service news article, off of the Honda of america interactive network, so if there is nothing seriously wrong with your car such as no check engine light, then there is your answer!

road_boy, from my experience, that's normal. I too have an 06 TL and was getting the same rotten egg smell on WOT. Now I have about 13500 miles and the problem has gone away. I believe the cat just needs to be broken into a bit more. I wouldn't worry about it. Try Chevron gas and see if it makes a difference.
