Attached adhesive backed felt to the underside of an intact cupholder slider in hope the tensile force would be applied evenly across ALL ribs instead of the first few.

Have tried the similar solution but with mount tape. The problem is those materials are stretching a little but enough to let the cover sticks to go apart after several slides. Good luck.
Looks good. I used duck tape on mine after replacing 4 times and it's been doing fine for a few months now as long as you push it together tight you can't see the cracks.
Similar to fix I did but I resisted using anything with a tape-like adhesive. My fear was those would get gummy in the heat over time, fail and be a mess to fix. So I used some cloth and cyanoacrylate glue (Krazy Glue) to bond the cloth to the underside of the cover. Practically speaking same as what you did. Realistically the cloth is thinner than felt and the bond should be more permanent and resistant to hot weather.
