Engine or Transmission Lag?

The car seems to be lagging. It’s not like all of a sudden it’s performing like a 4 cylinder 100hp car, as when it gets up to speed, it’s still fast. But in the past I would hit the gas and the car is more responsive. Now I’m forced to downshift more to really see some torque if needed, which can be definitely annoying/dangerous on the highway. Whether I’m in 1st or 6th gear, even if I’m in the power band, if I’ve been keeping the tach at a consistent level, let’s say 2 or 3000rpm, with the gas pedal at a constant level, if I really push down on the gas you’ll see the tach needle jump, and engine rev, and then the needle drops, and slowly the car starts to speed up. I didn’t really notice this until after I had my timing belt service done mid-summer, and it’s not like it started overnight.

I made a Youtube last night, which while it’s not the best quality (I was trying to drive after all) you can see what I’m talking about around the 17 and 28 second mark.

I’ve tried searching the forum but couldn’t quite find anyone with the same issue – if there’s another thread you know of please just post a link? Any help would be much appreciated!

Otherwise unfortunately I haven't stopped by in a while, but planning to put some more money into my '04 6-Speed Q1 of 2014. Need new brake pads all around, probably calipers/rotors in the back, and might need to get the 'stock' spoiler on the back like I used to have on my '05 before that one was claimed by a flood. My girlfriend got me a shiny new shifter from Acura too, as mine was getting pretty scratched up and the silver was starting to peel off. So hoping to diagnose the above issue before I start pouring even more money into the car!

It's great to be back here and look forward to anyone's advice, or if I can help anyone else around here! Happy New Year!!!

How many miles? Is your clutch slipping? Might try resetting the ECU, there are several threads relating to that.

Thanks for the reply.

~96000 miles. Started within the last 1000 miles.

I've had a clutch slip and go on my mid 90's maxima, and felt very different from this. This is slow and lesser torque then I'm used to, but not like you feel the car 'clunking' you into gear, or grinding/slipping in/out of gear.

And I can try the ECU reset, but I think that's more for autos, correct?

Limp mode was an option I declined during purchase.

And you made me do a triple-take when I saw your and GKin's post - I guess it's being away from the site for a while, but I coulda sworn you had the same profile pic!

The reset works for both but I do have an AT so not sure if it will do much for you. A lot of other things could be causing, faulty fuel pump pick up, faulty injector...you could have it check and see if it throws any codes. Might try disconnecting the battery, I think it needs to be off for 15 mins., and that will reset everything, including limp mode if you had it.

Thanks, I can always try the reset, what's the harm. I remember doing it about a year ago and didn't seem to change anything but maybe now it will.

I forget which, but I have an AutoZone and Advanced Auto Parts down the street from me, I think one does the free meter check on the code? Really want to get one of those that plug into Bluetooth and I can read on my Android tablet realtime as driving, but it's been a while since I read up on it, any idea if anyone here has done those and it works? (Sorry, I forget even the right terminology to search for).

I really hate having to bring the car to Acura as they're a little more of a drive and want to charge me $100 for someone to walk in the vicinity and glance at my car.

Could disconnect the battery, haven't done that in a while, and would then have to go through the Navi reset code which I'll have to find somewhere and I think reflash the Navi as I hacked the image etc. So probably getting the codes read is my best start.

And looked more into 'limp mode'. Didn't know that was a thing, but doesn't seem like what I have as I can really hit the gas and start accelerating, it just takes a while to redline.

Thanks again for the advice!

you do not have to "reflash" the navi, it doesn't get affected from disconnecting the battery. all you will need is the navi code

Clutch is gone. There's no other explanation for the rpms jumping like that unless it's wheel spin which it's not.

Brought the cat to the dealership over the weekend, but due to the snow and their being short staffed, they weren't able to do anything, including looking at the car. I talked to one of the parts guys and he did say it could have been a wheel/plate in the clutch, although I've had a clutch go on me before and didn't feel anything like this.

Probably having it diagnosed and fixed this coming Friday and Saturday, so will post more as I know it.

Posting a cheapo bump here, only as I see the thread has been moved to a different forum (a week later?) so hopefully some fresh sets of eyes on this thread might have any other advice/experience/thoughts?

If the clutch is going out, you can def smell it. I know you said you've had a burt out clutch, do you remember the smell of it? It really does look like its going out. Do you feel the shifter grinding at all? like its trying to get in gear but doesn't?

To close the loop on this - it was the clutch!

I've had a clutch go on me before, and was nothing like this. In previous cars, there was the horrible smell (I like to think of it as a "dead rotting octopus" fragrance) in addition to some metal sounds in some gears, or other gears being very difficult to shift into. This was quite different in the lack of power and RPMs, without some other telltale signs....

Thanks to all who replied!

that's because our clutch is self adjusting and it wouldnt give off normal telltale signs
