Engine Control Unit (ECU) Problem

Hey guys!

I'll get straight to the point. My car has been sitting in the mechanic shop for about a week and a half. Prior to that, my car, Acura Tl 2005 with 50,000 miles, stalled and wouldn't function properly. I ran it through a scanner and it gave me the code P0306 (misfire). I had the car towed to the mechanic. After a couple of days, they said it was not a misfire but a problem with the ECU. They resetted the whole unit and try to reprogram it and that should do it. Today I received a phone call saying that they were not able to do it and that the dealership has to do it because they were the only ones that can. He said the if the ECU is bad than it's going to cost me around $600ish for a replacement and labor $400ish from the dealer. I don't know how much all this is true and I want your guys feedback on this situation because it's getting frustrating. Thanks in advance!
