Electrical surge (?)/Temp reads "---"

Soooo... I got into my car last and turned the ignition. I noticed my AC come on (but I never leave it on) and it came on at 65 degrees (which I'd never set it to unless it's 100+ degrees outside). I turned the AC off. Then I noticed on the MID the temperature readout reads "---". It's been that way since. I've also had the XM station change to another preset on me a couple of times when I did nothing (I think) and when I attempted to raise the volume via the steering wheel controls. I'd be listening to channel A and then out of nowhere it switches to channel B.

Has anybody seen anything like this happen on their TL's before or seen anyone post about it? I may take it to the dealer if it's an electrical issue (oh joy).

For reference, I have an '04 TL Auto with Nav and just hit 137,000 miles when this happened. She's been pretty reliable so far and I was hoping to keep her until the next TL comes out (or until they fix that front end on the new ones).

Any help/suggestions appreciated!

I have seen this before on the forum but it happens when it is too hot outside. Weird.

Here is the TSB on it.

So what causes this? Does the heat physically damage the module?

Thanks ggesq, I appreciate it. This happened on a day when it was probably 60-70 outside, I think.

Have your battery checked. I noticed similar behavior with an old battery. As you crank the engine, the starter motor draws more amperage than what the battery can sustain. The battery will drop to an extremely low voltage to the point that the electrical devices in the car become reset as if you had disconnected the battery.

Correct your flatline temperature display problem ASAP. If you let your car sit for a number of days, you could wind up with a stone dead battery. You pull either #7 or #21 fuse (do a search as I don't recall which one) or remove your positive battery cable for about 10 seconds then put it back on. When the display goes flatline, the ECU gets into an error loop (at least for '04 models) and will drain your battery down.

I thought I'd come back here 3 months later and update everyone that my temperature readout is "working" again. Unfortunately had I come back after my last post in this thread, I could've read what Inaccurate and SouthernBoy had posted and attempted it.

Back when this happened, the Acura dealership told me the module that was probably fried would cost me about $800. I decided against it since the car had almost 140k on it at the time.

Fast forward about 3 months later to today. I just had my battery die on me about a week or so ago. After I got a new battery put in, my temp readout began functioning again. Yipee, I can tell how hot it is outside again!

Acura wouldn't replace it under good will since there indeed was a TSB to replace the unit? If you didn't try, I would.

I hate to say, but all is not well. It'll only be a matter of time before the unit malfunctions again and your battery is drained once again. I know the TSB says for 05 but I had this happen to my 04 and they replaced the unit under the TSB. It's not just 05 tls that have the issue.

If the ambient temp was above 113F, then the --- is normal. Otherwise, it's not.
