Discovered a oil Leak

Removed the cover by the tranny today as part of a jpipe install.
When it was removed I noticed oil there, it was the rear main seal.
Read around a bit, looks like the tranny has to come off to replace this seal.
Looks like a relatively slow leak for now, what are the consequences to not getting this fixed anytime soon?

Also, what am I looking at cost wise? (roughly)

About $9 for the part, $900 for the labor....

Just curious, did you happen to have had the power steering recall done recently?

I'd just keep an eye on it. If it's not leaving drops on the ground or excessive spreading on the underbody, I wouldn't worry to much. Sometimes these stop on there own.

I recently got the car it's an 04 6MT.
The previous owner was running regular oil, I recently finally got synthetic in there about 2 weeks ago.
I didn't see oil on the cover, it was spreading around the metal area. Does not seem like it's at the point where I'm leaving drops yet.
The threads I read so far, this will not stop on it's own and that makes sense. A bad seal is a bad seal.
I'll keep an eye on it, the mechanic who saw it also said it looks slow and to keep an eye on it.

Check the photo in this thread. Same location?

Mine stopped as suddenly and strangely as it started.

If the M/T is overfilled it will leak out at engine side. Needs to be filled to the inspection plug, not fill hole.

That's a different leak in that thread.

This is mine.

It's where the motor meets the tranny, so it's the rear main seal. This part is where the tranny cover is on the driver side

Have not had the tranny fluid done lately, last time was 6 months ago according to records. Do you mean overfilled with motor oil? That COULD be possible

I wiped off oil and it's was my new synthetic oil at that. still golden.

No transmission over filled. Remove the inspection plug, not the fill plug, and see if fluid runs out. If fluid flows out, it was overfilled.
Many know no better as they remove just the fill plug and add fluid in that hole until it runs out.............Wrong!

Where is the inspection plug at on the 04?
Also for my own understanding, how does overfilling the tranny fluid affect this deal to leak motor oil?

The dealer did my oil change and as part of the service they check fluids, so it's possible they topped me off a bit in there.

I checked the motor oil level and that's a TAD on the high side, I gave them 4.5qts so I think they used all that.
From what I read 4.5qts was what this motor takes.
