Disappearing License Plate

My city and surrounding areas recently installed cameras at intersections to snap pics of cars running red lights and to make huge sums of money. People have commented on radio talk shows that the lights seem to change faster than they used to. I was wondering. Does anyone sell a kit for a license plate, like a spring-loaded frame/holder to "hide" your license number from the camera while you cross an intersection? I know in the past, some cars had them because the gas cap was located under the license plate. It would be cool to have a push-button in your car, maybe connected to a cable, that would temporarily keep your license plate out of view. ha ha.

intersting.... some serious 007 james bond type of stuff

um... you could try one of those smokey covers.. dunno how well those work

if you really want to dissect it??

you need to get a small LINEAR ACTUATOR.. run the line through the backseat to the trunk... and drill a hole in your trunk... make sure your build a hinge for it to... sounds way to complicated to even attempt.

i could see some hilarious comedy coming from this though, he goes to try it out while driving, presses the button.. and FWWIINNGG.. his plate goes flying over into traffic and under a bridge or viaduct or something

my slow down for those lights, and remember where they are

I have seen a clear spray before that makes all light from angles reflect off of it and blides cameras. Best thing is when you look straight at it you can not tell that there is anything wrong. But from angles you cannot make out the plate. Last time I saw it it was on eBay for like $15

Hideaplate.com may have the answer, but they should put the wire in back of the plate. The principal is based on those new electronic window shades. At the push of a button, the window film is energized, making it appear opaque. That gives me an idea. There is already a power supply to the license plate bulb. I could tap into that in order to power some kind of concealing mechanism. It is illegal, so I probably won't end up doing it. But the tickets cost $110! I know, my 85-year old mother received a ticket in the mail. She drives very carefully and oh, so slow, like a grandma. (Maybe its because she IS a grandma.) Anyway, it may be an investment worthwhile. In the meantime, I won't do anything until I get caught.

There could be situations where the camera snaps your car's license plate in error. Like making a legal right turn on red or you're left in the middle of an intersection in stop-and-go traffic and to the camera it appears you ran a red light?

I do know that in Philly they felt they were not making enough money from the red light cameras so they shortened the yellow light. It just shows it all about making money and not safety.

I found a website (sorry, I forgot which one) that tested the various sprays on the market. They show comparable pictures of the license plate before and after applying the sprays. Not one of them was able to conceal your license plate number from any cameras. In short, none of them work as advertised.

They tried out all these things on Mythbusters and none of them worked. I would say the best method is to just not run red lights. I think most of us that have been driving for a while can feel it in your gut when a light is going to change.
