Did someone say cloudy headlights???

I read a thread about how to clean your headlights when they get
cloudy or scuffed. I also ran across a thread about sanding down your headlights and applying PlastX to give em that shine they once had.

Well I had the same problem & I tried the same thing but with a 3M
clearcoat filler (I believe) but I'm sure it was the same as PlastX.
Anyways I did the same process and it was much better I have to agree.
But let me say I am very picky so I tried a diff method. Well almost the
same but instead of using PlastX I shot another layer of clear coat & let
them cook. Folks I was AMAZED at how they looked. They looked brand
new.

Here are some pics & be nice I had to use my phone for the pics.....

LH after sanding

RH after sanding

Close up of LH after sanding

Close up of RH after sanding

Now the finished product!
RH Close up after Clear Coat

RH looking down after Clear Coat

They sparkle now

Very impressive, can you tell me what grit sand paper you used and the process. I'm too worried that I won't use the right grade and end up destroying it.

Great job!! I tried once and I really messed up. What is the exact 3M product you used? I wet sanded one of the headlights but the PlastX did not work for me! Your work really gave me some hope.

Thanks bro

JMillerUA6:
I was very impressed myself. I was stunned

Elegant TYPE S:
I used 800 sand paper that is what the painter told me to use.
He said just go horizontal left to right or right to left (No circles!!)

Fulani has a TL:
Not sure. My headlights were scuffed up & had chips from normal driving.
I just wanted to make them look new again or at least cleaner.

chapu08:
hey man there is hope... Trust me! I wasnt sure if it would work but
the painter I know told me he had another guys Truck Headlights ready
for a shot of clear coat too. As far as the 3M product I would have to
go back to the shop & check.

wow! So all you did was spray after 800 grit sanding in those pics?

Did you buff them?

Yes sir. I wish I had my Canon on me I would have took much better pics.
I will take some better pics after it stops raining here.
But I wanted to let everyone know that its possible to have that new
headlight look when they are scuffed up. Just need to find someone
that can spray clear coat & let them cook.

BTW I did not buff them.

so by 'let them cook' did you mean throw them in an oven?

Well I did mine at a bodyshop. So the painter put them in a closed off room
that is used for painting cars. He shot a layer of clear coat on them and let
them heat (i.e. cook) for about 15mins to make sure the clear coat drys.
Thats all I meant by that.

I'm gunna try to do the same to my wife's car but I'm going to do it at my
house. I'm going to try some clear coat in a spray can & see how that works.

If memory serves me correctly, its never a good idea to clear coat the headlight lenses since it alters the way the light is thrown and causes a ton of glare... But I do have to say they look amazing!

Honestly I didn't think so either but the painter told me that when you sand
your headlights all your doing is sanding off the clear coat. So I guess
Headlights come with a clear coat..? I dunno.

Thank you BTW. I love them now. They really stand out to me.

Now I need to get these bad boys over to JnC & get them V2 B/O & ZKW-R
