Decided to check my filter..

Was wondering why I was getting such bad mileage on the 08 TL-S I just bought, and decided to check my air filter.... Anyone think i'll be getting better mileage now? I hope so!! If not, im just happy my engine can breathe again!

Here's the thing, expect your mileage to stay exactly the same or go down a bit with the new air filter. It is physically and scientifically impossible for your engine to deliver better fuel economy with a clean filter.

I always wonder how it is possible.... You spend $$$$$ for car and cant spend 10$ for filter once a year.

Good thing the car just got sold to a new owner ... previous owner might have kept that old filter for 10 more years. Just replaced my filter today, now I'm thinking I would have stuck with the old for a while if I'd compared it to that old one.

No, performance will be slightly improved, hence the slight reduction in fuel economy.

If you care about the quality of the filtration, lose the K&N and stick with OEM style filters.

Did you ever have the oil analyzed? If you did you would have had the results come back with high silicone (sand) contamination. The fact is K&N filters are crap when it comes to filtering.

I never had my oil properly analyzed in my previous car that I used a K&N, but just looking at the oil, it was clear it had more dirt in it when using the K&N vs OEM. I will never go back...also to note...I despised having to clean, dry, and re-oil it. So much less time consuming to just swap out the OE one on a regular basis.

To the OP...if the engine air filter was neglected that badly...assume the rest of the maintenance probably was as well. Check and probably change just about any other fluid in the car and for sure check the cabin filter.

I've been here since 2007 and by far that is the WORST filter I've seen yet, that thing must have over 50,000 miles on it!

I used air filters from K&N for arround 10years but never used oil from kn that had to be my first time. After Your post I started reading reviews on amazon ( place where I ordered parts ) and Youre right as far as air and cabin filters got good reviews , then oil filters looks like kind a joke, many of users complained because of leaks from oil filter proved with pics, I am returning it tomorrow.. It is sad that company like kn doing shitty parts.

Good lord! That is by far the dirtiest filter I have ever seen in my life (including any online pics). Now keep in mind if that filter is that filthy, go check the cabin air filter. In my experience people are way more likely to forget about that one compared to the other one. I usually swap out both filters the day I buy my used cars. I’m willing to bet your cabin filter is even nastier.

YouTube vidio posted by a Honda Civic Type R owner, from the UK, who dissected 9 engine oil filters made for his Civic. He compared the internal parts of each. The comparison chart he prepared, shows the Honda OEM filter as one of the two, out of nine, best filters available, at any price.
Of course, his comparison is not a scientific study of filtering capability, resulting from a comparison oil analysis for each filter, but it is informative, especially regarding "media surface area" etc.

Nice video. I'd be interested to see what a Mobile1 filter looks like inside. Might just be ditching those for OEM.

Unless you're running something like 15,000 mile OCIs, then the OEM style filter will probably give as good, if not better, results.

FWIW, due to the hard to reach nature of the oil filters on my two cars with J-Series engines, I've migrated over to the Fram Ultra Synthetic oil filters. Yes they are a bit more expensive, but between the synthetic media and the "Sure Grip" end on the filter housing, they make oil changes a snap and the filtration is about as good as it gets (as opposed to the bargain basement orange Fram filters which are just this side of crap).

I would go OEM filter over K&N filter any day of the week, many automotive channel busting on CAI and SRI gain HP along with K&N drop in Myth. I gain some experience in A/C home where the more particle that filter able to filtrate its translate to less airflow through it, just change the filter according to recommend by your user manual indicated.

I have (but you know this), and Si was always normal. I ran a K&N for over 165K miles on my Supra and over 200K miles on my TL. No issues.

Just a thought- if the air filter is THAT dirty, it might be worth you going over every square inch of the car, to see what else was neglected, including, but not limited to:

Brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, not sure if yours is an auto or manual, but either way, clutch packs or clutch fluid, whichever, brake rotors, brake pads, cabin air filter, engine oil, sway bar endlinks (front and back), compliance bushings up front, engine mounts, uh... what else? I'm sure there is more I'm not thinking of. But that should keep you busy for a little bit at least

If anyone wanted to argue the above statement, this little article backs that up!

There is one exception to what I wrote earlier; if the car in question has an old-school carbureted engine, yes, a clean air filter will in fact improve fuel economy. Most likely this is the origin the urban legend which says a clean air filter will improve fuel economy on a modern fuel injected car.
