CV Boot DIY

My car was in getting an oil change (because I had a free oil change coupon! lol) and the mechanic noted that my right front outer cv boot was starting to split ($240 parts/labor/tax). I cannot afford this.

I searched AZine but was unable to find (perhaps I overlooked) so I checked out a few generic youtube clips and it seems pretty straight forward.

Is this a pretty easy job for an inexperienced DIY attempt? Is there anything quirky about our cars? Is it a pita to stretch the cv boot over the joint?

I'm a "learn as you go" type of person. I don't know how to do things until I do them so please excuse me if this is a very common easy or hard thing to do as I've never had to do it before so don't know!

Thanks!

Justin-

After stumbling onto this thread:

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/cv-boots-toast-704496/

..I am now debating on if I should bother replacing the boot now or just wait until it fully splits and just replace the axle (regardless of if I try it myself or have it done professionally).

Opinions?

Just replace it... GSP from advance auto is a good replacement.

It is easier to just by a rebuilt 1/2 shaft with new boots on it and swap out the old ones. You can do a boot that has a split in it that you put together with out taking off the axle, but I prefer the OEM style boot that you get with the rebuilt 1/2 shaft. I have not done this in a while, but it is not a difficult task.

You can purchase a boot set from Acura/Honda for @ $23, or Rock Auto for $8 (boot, clamps, grease) and do it yourself, but it's not an easy task. After the axle is removed, cut the clamps and remove the boot, split shaft at joint, nothing more than retaining the shaft and knocking the joint from the snap ring, clean, regrease, install new boot over shaft, replace joint onto shaft, cover with boot and secure with clamps, but you'll need a boot clamp tool. Don't use the split boots.

The replacement of the entire shaft is much easier although more costly.

A few years ago, the daughter was on a budget with her Maxima so I replaced the outer boots on both shafts for a total of $26, but it certainly wasn't an hour job, but has been fine since.
