Cracked Air Intake: Problem? Hard to DIY?

Hello all. Just got my 06 TL home today and after setting up seat positions, cleaning off the glass and wheels, double checking my tranny fluid was actually pink, etc... I realized there was a big old crack in the large, Black Rubber "tube" to the right of the of the engine. I did a little googling, it obviously isnt something that carries fluid, and the exhaust travels through metal, so its clearly the air intake. I guess that's why I'm not getting any lights or noticeable issues from it - air is just getting in through the crack instead of the intended intake point I guess.

Is this going to effect performance or mpg? Is it hard to DIY, or is there a risk I might mess something else up replacing it?

Seems like even I should be able to do this, I'm just loosening the attached clips, collar, and spring, replacing the tube, and re attaching the connecting hoses right? And there shouldn't be fluid in any of those hoses either, huh?

That's correct. Just as the parts diagram depicts. No fluid should be involved. If you are adventurous, you may be able to find one in a local salvage yard there in D.C. Just search car-part.com for local salvage yards or, of course, just purchase a new OEM one, easy peasy.

It is good you are fixing this soon. You are getting some unfiltered air (dust, any bugs that stray in the crack) into your engine. I imagine really dirty air is bad for the oil and eventually the places the oil touches.

Yeah good call, definitely replace the oil after the redoing this to get rid of the contaminants

I ended up just buying a $12 OEM-like part on Amazon that will require a quick hole-punch but should do the job grand. Luckily I have no plans to drive the vehicle or I would have gone for the electrical tape fix that I've seen some people use. I now see that the tube in question goes between the filter and the engine, so definitely going to be worth a replacement!
