figured i would post up some pics since a few members wanted to see what i did.
call it ghetto, but it works better than my AEM CAI did. not to mention when everything is put together it looks completly stock.
i used dryer tubing as you can see, and a highflow K&N
PVC jammed into intake box w/ dryer hose attatched with clamp

path of tubing to nice cool fresh air

as you can see it looks completely stock when put together...

gawd damn ima skinny white boy
hope this helps out anyone that is looking for a great stock looking intake that doesnt sound too loud either. i think its a great alternative to spending 300 bucks on an intake. this was less than 50 dollars with the cost of the K&N

not too shabby. dont forget the comptech utilizes a cone filter which is supposedly supposed to have a greater surface area to suck in air. but this is good. just paint that vent black yo.
any homemade intake is as good as the aftermarket. i had a homedepot intake on my mx6 for years and it made the car sound like a monster and it produced better results than a 250 dollar piece of pipe.
It looks good man.
You could go out and get a cone filter for the dryer hose if you wanted, I think they are $26 at Pep Boys.
Did you put anything at the other end of the dryer hose? I decided to use a stainless steel drain mesh(yes the one that is used in the drain of a kitchen sink) from Walmart for $1.67 and screwed it down into the tip of my ghetto-intake. Hopefully it will keep some of the bigger particles out of the air-box.

I don't think there is any concern with hydrolocking with a short ram intake since it is in the engine bay and not down near the bumper. Unless you spill you're brewski on the cone filter while working under the hood, which is a big no-no in the first place, the battery does not double as a cup holder! This mod shouldn't create a concern for hydrolocking, since the stock airbox is still being used.
if your intake is dipped in the water, you have much bigger probs than hydrolocking...your car is prob totalled. Plus you should never be dumb enough to drive your car in a flooded street.

... HEY... somebody answer my question...So am I correct in thinking that the tube really doesn't matter as long as you put a god ol' K&N cone on the tip? cause I was thinking of doing some custom tubing also. (but not with a dryer hose)

ill take some better pics another time, we were just in a hurry cause that wasnt the reason why we took off the bumper

the piping is completely hidden unless you are at a very extreme angle looking inside the bumper. i dont see how a rock would ever make it in there.
sorry guys. i deleted those pictures out of my photobucket and my computer hard drive stopped a few months back so i lost ALL of my pictures. maybe ross has them saved somewhere, but i doubt it.
ill try and take pictures when i get home from work.

well i was unsuccessful in taking pictures of the dryer hose. to really see it the bumper needs to be removed and i have no urge to do that. basically it is a pvc fitting that is threaded on one end (male) and is just a sleeve on the other (female). it is then screwed into where the resonator is removed. the dryer hose is then hose clamped to the other end of the sleeve and run down to the bottom of the bumper.
fitting looks something like this in around 3"-4"...i forgot exactly.

I did this to my stock with a K & N drop in filter. Plus I modified the vent to be a ram air system.

I had this set up for about 5 years, then last summer I finally broke down and bought a comptech ice box. There is something to say about r&d because I definitly noticed a difference. you can make your own and save yourself some money, but nothing beats the real thing. Plus I modified the comptech to be the same as my other ram air system. I took off comptech's horn and replaced it with a 4" elbow and added 4" of that flex tubing I had on the stock system. Then added that horn I made to go on the back of my modified vent and now I have a "ram air ice box" with the k&n cone filter.

that ask the same questions.
