Clicking Noise When Accelerating with Wheels Turned?
It's a 2008 TL-S 6MT.
I hear a clicking noise coming somewhere from the front whenever I accelerate from a stop with the wheels turn (i.e. in the middle of a u-turn, stop, then accelerate). It only clicks while I releasing the clutch.
It's fine when I'm accelerating with the wheels straight or making a regular turn at low speeds.
Is this normal?

NO!! its NOT normal for any noise like that
Sounds like CV joint binding- thats the noise they usually make when going bad
May be a defective part or something else hitting under those conditions
Try it on a sidestreet- full lock steering and easy forward- listen for noise
try both directions then call dealer for appointment
Better a cv than a clutch t/o bearing
Note Front wheel drive cars do NOT like throttle with the wheels cranked- it puts major stress on the parts-
get the wheels straight before getting on the throttle hard
If its only certain conditions when it makes nosie- ask for the head tech to take a ride with you so you can demonstrate it

I had a similar noise and it was a subframe that was cracked and it needed to be replaced.
Just bring the car into a dealer and make sure to drive it with one of the tech's inside, so you do not get "cannot reproduce" type of bs when you get to pick up your car.

Usually the subframe click due to a stress crack by the rack mount ear will not be heard under accelleration. Those reproduce best from a standing still change in rack direction movement IE turning from left and then to right.

so we all agree- this is something the dealer needs to see immedialty

Eh. I wouldnt lose any sleep over it. Could be something as simple as axle nut torque too. If the car is under warranty and you are sure you can verify the noise when you take it to the dealer then by all means make an appt.

Like I said. Try to find a pattern that you can consistently make the noise so you can relay it to the guys at the dealer. If they come out with the NPF theory at least you will be able to go and demonstrate it for them and get it fixed.

Then you are a good candidate for getting your car repaired lol. Head on over to the dealer and have them look at it. Just save yourself some time and ask them if they would like you to replicate the noise BEFORE you shove off. This way you wont have to schlep back to duplicate your concern. And yes NPF is No problem found.

I had the same clicking noise on my 05. Mine was used when I bought it with 45k on it. I drove it to the dealership and they fixed it. If anyone not sure if they will fix it, they will. It's covered under your warranty. I wish I could post the paperwork they gave me when it was done but I'm not a computer/internet whiz. Here is what they found: Cause: DIAG NOISE FOUND AXLE JOINTS NOISEY/REPLACED BOTH FRONT DRIVE AXLES
- DRIVESHAFTS, BOTH-REPLACE. INCLUDE: REPLACEMENT OF AXLE SEAL IF NECESSARY
- 44305-SEP-A02 DRIVESHAFT ASSY., R
- 44306-SEP A02 DRIVESHAFT ASSY., L
2 90305-SD4-003 NUT, SPINDLE(24MM)
I have an 05 6MT with Brembo's if this helped out anyone. No more clicking noise! Not sure of the other dealerships but they had a whole listing of what's covered under your warranty and I found that it was so I inquired. Sorry all but I'm a noob and I barely post anything. Thanks for all the info here, I've learned a lot!!!

I'm not exactly sure. I don't see why not. If you're around an Acura dealership I would at least ask. Check your extended warranty, it may be listed as to what is covered and what's not. Got to love the fine print! I didn't buy my TL from an Acura dealership but since I knew about the 50,000 mile warranty, I had to at least ask.

I have 55K on my '05/6-sp and have noticed a few clicks out of what sounded like the passenger CV when it was cold over the last couple years. Now, heading into this winter it's doing it cold or warm, left or right turn. Took it into my dealer (Nalley - Marietta, GA). WARNING - this is NOT an item that covered after the 50K warranty runs out! $510 for part and labor. If your car is "clicking" - don't do like I did... get it checked out and fixed b/f the mileage runs out.
With that said, Nalley stood up for their customer and called Acura and are replacing the right-side axle for free under a "one-time customer good will". Considering that the boots are NOT split, that is a very fair response, I think. Axles/CV joints should NOT fail at that mileage if the boots are intact and no dirt has gotten to the joints. I have certainly replaced enough on my own on previous Hondas/Acuras with higher mileage.
My $0.02

Sorry, don't know about aftermarket stuff and how Acura looks at it in regards to warranty. However, I would think that if you have the stock parts (axles) there wouldn't be any reason that Acura wouldn't warranty their parts (within the 50K factory warranty) regardless of suspension. Comments from others? Also, I'm sure that dealer-to-dealer will vary on what they are willing to do.
My TL is pretty bare-bones stock (new baby-boy in April, so no funds!) other than tint and Valentine-1.

If you still have your stock suspension then put them back on and then go to the dealer. When I get my aftermarket suspension I'm planning on keeping them until the warranty is completely gone. Some dealerships don't care about what you done to it when it comes to aftermarket parts and others will almost produce a baby at the counter! I would call first.

Probably the only thing you can do now is just ask. If they know you a bit then they might work with you. Good luck though. What happened to where you got your clutch replaced? Just asking.

yep.. fawk. i don't think they will replace it though.

The Axle issue is a big problem in the '04TLs now .. just got mine replaced... out of warranty cost me $550.00
this should be a sticky as there will be MANY more questions/threads regarding this. Apparently, for the '04-'08 gen TL .. they used a CV joint without a boot, therefore when the CV joint begins to fail, there is no leak of fluid to alert the owner/mechanic... these things will cause gumming up of the CV joint, clicking with turning, particularly when cold, and possibly causing the car to pull to the left. It's $310.00 per axle (labor not included) and each side requires about 1.5 hrs of work ($85.00/hr at most Acura's).
best of luck

Update:
The weather last week dipped down to around -15 F and the clicking sound came back. This time it was only coming from the right side. I took it in Friday 1/16/09. When I got to the dealer, the car was still cold enough that it was still making the clicking noise. The service guy hopped in the car and I drove it around the parking lot and reproduced it for him. (I was afraid they were going to call me later and feed me some bs about not being able to reproduce it).
I do get a call later saying that they were able to reproduce it, but since they only have about 15 mins. before the clicking stops that they would need to hold the car until today (1/20/09).
Today they call and said they drove it and wasn't able to reproduce the clicking noise anymore. That maybe it's just something that happens when it's super cold outside. I told them, even though it only happens when it's really cold outside, it's not suppose to be doing that. He told me that there's nothing further they can do until they can reproduce it again.
I told them what about when my warranty runs out, which is good for only another 2,000 miles. He told me that it's documented and that it'll be taken care of if and when the problem comes back. Anyone ever expericenced this and if it's true that they'll honor it even though the warranty expires?
I'm going to pick up my car at the dealership now. If the clicking is there again, I'm going to be pissed!

Anyone have this issue in reverse? I have a 6 SP 04TL and notice this same sound when backing out of the garage in the AM. I don't notice it other times (doesn't mean it's not happening). I didn't think it was a big deal, but now I have cause for concern. My warranty expires next week!!

Haha, I googled "clicking sound from wheels when accelerating" and a link to this thread was the very first result. How convenient.
Anyway, I have a clicking sound when driving straight (but didn't check for the sound during turns...will check for that). I actually bought the car last last Tuesday (7/7) and there was no sound. I took the car back to the dealership for a wheel alignment last Saturday (7/11), and I noticed the sound just this week. Maybe I didn't notice it before? Maybe the alignment caused something?
Anyway, i'm glad I found this thread. I'll give the dealership a call tomorrow and hopefully have this settled.

Definately your Front Driveshafts/ CV joints... I had the same problem after 20,000 kms and they covered it saying that they weren't lubed up enough... its definately covered under warranty and shouldn't be a problem they replaced mine no problem in under 2 days.....

Just had my driver side axle replaced as well for the same clicking issue. They said the passenger side was fine. Along with a break fluid flush, ran me $660. Ouch!

does anyone know if the acura dealer will replace your cv axle if you bring them ones that you bought yourself? i know acura overcharges for everything (every dealer does actually), and i was able to find new cv axle's for dirt cheap (rockauto rocks!). i think i'd prefer to have this done at an acura dealer since 99% of the cars they work on are acura's. i am not sure if i trust the local small shops for this kind of stuff.
