Lightbulb Center console rattle help.

Well, I was putting up with the rattling in the center console. I have read that this has been an issue for many owners for a while. I was touching different parts of the area to try an diagnose the problem. In my TL (2004), I noticed that putting my finger over the top storage compartment (just under the tape deck) stopped the rattle.

So, I went to Michaels and bought some self stick, clear rubber pads. I cut one in half and placed a half on each side behind the door just under the tape deck. You have to be careful when placing these things on, because once they stick, they are not suppose to be removed. Pleace a half a pad on the on the edge of the black surface just behind the top compartment door. You will notice that it is slightly more difficult to shut the door, but it still works. The biggest difference is a big reduction in the rattles from the console. It's worked really well for me.

I can't post pictures on here, so I am giving you guys a link to some pictures of what to use and how to install it. I hope this helps you guys:

Rubber pads

Cut a single pad in half with an exacto knife

Place the pad on the black surface behind the top storage compartment door.

Installation complete!

Please note that once you install these things, you shouldn't try to take them off. The package warns you that it will destroy the surface if you try. Also, if you are opening and closing this compartment on a regular basis, you will notice that it is slightly harder to get the door to "catch" the first time. However, it still does close completely. I just wanted to warn you.

This has made my ride significantly quieter, and since I don't have some of the other rattles people have been complaining about, I noticed a big difference. In any case, if you are looking for a quick $4.00 fix, this is your best bet to make your TL a quieter ride.

Later ^^

Thanks for the post. This is the only significant rattle in my 04, so I was thinking something soft like felt or resilient like rubber or foam would help but was kinda reluctant to try to mess with those damn doors. But I might try your fix and see how it goes.

Thanks for the pics, too, though the middle two are a bit blurry. But I think I get the idea.

Yeah, I took those with my cameraphone. I'll try and take some better ones with a digital camera and get them up soon. Felt may work well too. I hadn't thought of using that. The main thing is to minimize movement of that top door.

It's not going to hurt your doors or anything. Only reason I mentioned the caution is because some people might get annoyed if they have to try to click it more than once to open or close the door. I am happy with the results.

But, let me know how it goes.
