CEL won't clear

Is there something I am doing wrong? My CEL came on and gave me the code for the coolant temp sensor. Everytime I clear the code using the OBD tool the light on the dash stays on. I even tried disconnecting the battery for about an hour and that didn't work either. Is there some sort of special procedure or something I don't know about?

Did you try fixing the coolant temp sensor? You should do this first, then clear the code and enjoy CEL free dash.

Was the car running when you tried to clear it?
It needs to be off in acc mode.

Your ECU relies on your ECT for a multitude of things.

One of which is during start-up. When you start the car up, the ECU is waiting to receive information from the ECT sensor. It realizes it's not receiving any information so it sets a code and triggers the light.

The reason why the light isn't resetting is because everytime you turn your car on (even if the engine is off and only radio is on) the ECU is supposed to receive signal from the ECT. You'll continue getting the light until you fix it.

If you have a multimeter test the sensor.
