try removing the little access tab with a pen or little flat head screwdriver. lightly insert it in there and see if it'll shift. also make sure your brake lights are coming on. if not then its your brake pedal switch. Last thing is there is a solenoid plunger and if you're really quite you can hear it when you tap your brakes. the sound should come from the right of the shifter underneath the console.

do you know if any coffee or soda was spilt on or around your shifter? How about those brake lights? Obviously that little plunger solenoid isn't doing its job. When you press on the brakes, the plunger is activated and it lets you shift into gears. You are just overriding it when you insert the screwdriver in there.

since the brake lights do go on, it means the electronics are fine, its just a mechanical problem with the selenoid
