A/C Stopped Cooling!!

I just replaced rotors & pads on my '07 Type S with StopTech PowerSlot Crossdrilled and Slotted kit from XLR8 Performance, as well as ss brake lines and new rear calipers. Did the break-in for a couple of days. Then yesterday I did some "spirited" driving. While doing this the a/c was on. I noticed a strange smell after braking and down shifting with the paddles. The braking was not excessive nor was the speed for down shifting...imo. My friend noticed the smell at the same time I did. He thought it may be the brakes. I agreed...until now. We drove around awhile longer, but with the a/c off. After dropping him off I turned the a/c back on but it only blows hot/ambient temp. Could I have messed something up with the compressor? I have zero experience with a/c repair. I will more than likely take it to the stealership, but just wanted to check with The Pros here first. Thanx in advance.

Just make certain that the A/C button is activated, but difficult to make a guess unless you know that there is no charge remaining in the system and the only way to do that is to check at one of the schrader valves or check with gauges.

Based on what you said in your post, can you describe the "smell"? Burning? Electrical? Refrigerant? Was the smell brief or does it still lingere? Can you still smell it?
As a technician I can advise you on a few simple checks you can do on your own. Check for belt shredding, AC compressor can lock up while the belt still spins. Check for compressor operation.?
Start by commanding the AC system on (engine running), with the hood open check to see if both cooling fans are running. If both fans are running it means the a/c compressor is also being commanded on, check to see if the compressor clutch is engaged. Its the center portion surrounded by the belt pulley. If the compressor is engaged, you may have a leak causing AC performance to deminish. Also if the compressor is stuck on, it can over pressurize the system and bleed off through the relief valve on the bottom of the ac compressor. You can check for an oily residue on the subframe directly under the relief valve.

Sorry to post this and do what I did so quickly...I took it to a local mechanic today. At any rate, maybe this will help someone else. Thanks for the quick responses guys.

The smell was a BRIEF burnt electrical smell. As far as I could tell the A/C button was activated because the display showed on or off when pushed. I did a DTC diagnosis several times and the only thing that would happen is the blower would blow and the A/C would show "ON". Both cooling fans where running as well. I did not check for an oily residue on the subframe directly under the relief valve.

The compressor needs replaced. I didn't want to wait too long as this is my wife's car and we have two young girls she transports day to day and place to place. I'm not very mechanically inclined so from the other posts on here and reading the Chilton I already knew this was beyond my skill level. $863 installed. He didn't mention any belt damage so I assume/hope that it is fine. I will ask him tomorrow about the belt. A fellow AcuraZiner, and a HUGE gearhead, recommended this gentleman and as far as I can tell he seems very trust worthy. Thanks again!

Hmmm...just wondering if the compressor clutch coil and clutch assembly just needed replacing? Whole compressor assembly not need replacing if the clutch is not engaging...approx.-$600-$900 repair as far as I've seen based on parts and labor times.
As long as u got it fixed, my diagnosis was pointing in the right direction.
