C-036: Transmission filter change how to with pics

C-036: Transmission filter change how to with pics

Ive been having problems with my tranny and I finally had time to do the 3x3 drain and fill today, I also changed the 3rd and 4th clutch pressure sensors and the tranny filter. I took some pics cause I couldnt find a how to on the filter change, it was super easy though.

Transmission filter change- 3rd gen TL:

Heres all the stuff I bought- All you need for the filter change is the following part #s:
filter- 25450-RAY-003 ($11.90)
o-ring for filter lid seal- 91301-RAY-004 ($3.64)
filter gasket- 91302-RAY-003 ($2.53)
you will also need 2 crush washers for the banjo bolt- 94109-12000 ($.38 each)... I bought it all from AcuraOEMparts.com

I also bought the 2 pressure sensors- (28600-RAY-003 and 28610-RAY-003) (both $33.51)


First remove the airbox. I took off the lid and detached it from the TB, also unhook the little metal tube going into the plastic intake tube, then theres 2 10mm bolts holding down the lower airbox section. I also removed the 2 10mm bolts holding the fuse box down so I could shove it out of the way, but you dont really need to...
Once you get it all off heres what you will see:

You will need a 17mm wrench to remove the banjo bolt, it wasnt on tight. Push it back a little so its out of the way and remove the 3 10mm bolts holding the lid on over the filter. The bottom one is a PITA, its easier with ratcheting wrenches. After you get it off grab it by the little tab sticking out of the lid and pull it straight out. Then pull out the dirty old filter.




Put the gasket and o-ring on where they go, its pretty self explanatory. Then be careful when putting the new filter in, there is a spring inside that little cup and it has to be centered in there. It hooks onto something in the middle there and you can tell if its right because the filter wont go in far enough if its not on right. Then put the lid back on and tighten the 3 bolts down. Use common sense- once you get them kinda snug go around and tighten each one a little at a time so it goes on straight.

Sorry, my camera died after that so no more pics- Next you put the banjo bolt back on, dont forget the crush washers!!! Clean up the area with some brake cleaner so there isnt tranny fluid everywhere- then put the airbox back on.

I hope this helps you guys. I have a couple questions too while youre here- The tranny cooler (I think thats what the circular thing next to the filter is) looks pretty weak and useless- has anyone installed a regular fluid cooler- like the air cooled ones that mount up front??? I wanna do that but I dont know the best way to do it

Nice write up on the filter change and nice pictures. I have a question though, how did you replace the two sensors and also, did this fix work? Is the tranny working better??

+1 -- I put my tranny cooler on 2 days ago, got one out of a junkyard off an old explorer for $11 and bought 12' of 3/8 fuel safe hose for $15. It was super easy only took like 2.5hrs. I used your writeup as a guide, Im gonna put the magnefine filter on soon too.


As for the sensors, they are really easy to put on, theres a writeup in that too in the garage. My tranny is working waaaaaay better now, the fluid that was in it was almost black and as thin as water. The assholes that owned the car before me did not take care of it at all. The serpentine belt had chunks out of it when I replaced it. Im pretty pissed but Im gonna overhaul this thing and get it running as good as possible.

Did you do your own 3x3 drain .. I was wanting to get it done at the dealer but i know their going to over charge... Those bastards...

Nice info, I'm learning a lot from this forum, but how important is adding a tranny cooler on a scale of 1-10?

Great post. Was there much fluid loss when you took off the housing or the filter? If there is one thing i hate, its fluid, oil, dripping all over everything. Thanks!

Importance of a cooler = 6 out of 10, IMO.
There is some fluid loss when changing the filter, but not so much that it can't be cleaned up fairly easily. Place some rags/paper towels around it to catch as much as you can. Brake cleaner gets the rest off.
Do the 3X3 yourself using the numerous DIYs available. You will be amazed how easy the car is to work on. Saving all of that labor charge $$$ puts an even bigger smile on your face.

The hardest part of the whole thing is taking off the 17mm tranny fill hole bolt. Have a breaker bar available its a bitch

It was no match for my regular craftsman 1/2inch rachet....maybe im just stronger than you?

I actually thought it was kind of a pain in the ass taking off the bottom cover and the fill bolt isn't exactly in an ideal spot. I spoiled myself with my 99 Accord 4cyl which is way to easy to work on (minus the crankshaft bolt)

Just had my 07 TL tranny drained and re-filled (no-flush) at the dealer. Feels better and smoother! 54,000 miles I plan to do this every 15,000 miules and the tranny should last for a long time.

This is a great write up I wich I could find how to's with pictures for replacing the sensors....I'm new here and I can't access the garage yet!!

Nice write up but I'm a little curious. What's the difference in the switch(es) part # 28600-P7Z-003 for 3rd gear, 28600-P7W-003 for 4th gear.

Turbocoop has the part #'s listed at 28600-RAY-003 and 28610-RAY-003. Is there a difference or did Honda change part #'s?

Inevitibly Honda has changed part #'s according to acuraoemparts.com. The P7Z & P7W part #'s are for the 99-03 TL. Turbocoop has the right part #'s, but which is which lol

The 286xx-RAY-003 parts are for the 3G, the 28610-RAY-003 is the 3rd gear sensor and the 28600-RAY-003 is 4th gear. There is a difference on the PSI that it is sensing for.

Thanks my friend^^ I knew there was a difference but that douche at the parts desk was being so short on the phone today I ended the call short lol I already know how to install, just couldn't remember which was which haha

I just did this to my TL also following libert69's writeup, same as yours... it was super easy. your filter is alot cleaner then mine! I have 68k on my car and i dont think anything has ever been done with the trans fluid! Did a 3x3 with z1 but the S/C will be coming so ill do it again with Redline and get a cooler on it asap! Nice Writeup
