Burning smell coming from engine?

I have a 04 TL 6MT with 120k miles and when I was driving home tonight, I downshifted to 5th gear and it just rev'd at redline like it was in neutral then eventually I put it back into 6th and the car got back to normal but now there is a burning smell coming from the left side of the engine (when facing the car) My car has been off for about an hour now and the smell reaks in the garage.

What could be the problem?

Also, when shifting through all the gears when the car is off, it won't shift into 5th gear anymore. What is the problem with that? Did I just break my transmission?

I think that's the last time that I beat on my car -_-

I woke up this morning and the burning smell is still there, I'm going to take the car out today and see if I can get the car to go into 5th gear.

I'm not sure, I bought the car at 102k but I haven't replaced it.

Update: I drove the car today and it drives fine but it only goes into 5th gear if the car is moving just not when I'm idling or when the car is off.

I brought it to technician friend of mine and he said the smell was coming from the clutch and we put it in the air and there was some oil residue coming from where the clutch housing is and inside was all dirty and oily. He said maybe a synchro might have to be replaced too since I can't go into 5th gear when the car is off but all the other gears are fine.

How much would this cost to get repaired at an Acura dealership? I don't think I would be able to do this in my garage especially this TL being my daily so I'd have to get a loaner car from the dealership.

Just for the clutch, probably ~$1500-$1700 at a stealership. Anything under $1000 would be a fair price IRRC (this would be from an indy shop).

Not sure how much more for the synchro....

Is it bad to drive your car with a burnt clutch like this? It's my daily and I don't have a second car to use in the meantime.

If you keep driving it with the burnt clutch, assuming that is really the problem, then eventually the clutch will just slip to the point of not being able to engage any gears. Then you will have no car to drive. Its best you get the problem fixed immediately.

Also if the 5th synchro is bad then the dealer will have to open up the transmission which is a lot of labor and will most likely replace this part number, 23626-PYZ-305. That part is 275 dollars on an acura parts website.

Ok, thank you for the info. I'm going to take my car into the Acura dealership after work on Monday.

I'll just let them know about the burning smell and how I can't put my car into 5th gear while the car is off or at idle. How do you tell if your 5th gear synchro is bad? Or can you only tell by taking apart the transmission?
