Broken TL

I currently have 07 TL auto. The other night I backed out of my parking space and when I put the car into drive it made a metallic popping noise and wouldn't move. I had to push it into a parking space and tow it the next day. In park it sounds and runs fine, but if I put it in drive or reverse it wont move and makes a hellacious spinning dinging noise coming from the transmission area. I'm short on cash so I haven't taken it to a garage yet. I'm really hoping I don't have to get a new transmission but what else could it be? Maybe the CVs? Any input is appreciated, Thanks.

Most people have this issue when one of the drive axles breaks.

OK, thank you. I'm really hoping it isn't my transmission. Would a broken axel cause the car to not move at all and make noise in gear? Anyone else have any input on my problem? Thanks again

Generally, yes- the tranny if it was going will shift roughly, slip and sometimes bang into gear, and you normally would get CEL on the dash. If the axle breaks, the car simply won't move despite giving it gas. By the way, an axle replacement from what I've read here will be a whole lot cheaper than a new tranny (think low hundreds vs thousands for a replacement tranny). It sounds like in either case it has to be flat bedded to the repair shop (and an independent shop should be able to do this- no need for the dealership where the costs will no doubt be higher).

I had this happen on my 07 AT just after I replaced the axles. Dealer claimed I didn't seat it all the way into the tranny. Was a reman'd CV from Honda and I think the retention ring on the end was crap. Did any fluid come out? You won't see the CV hanging if it popped out of its seat with the way everything is laid out, you will need to be under it to see that.

The stealership I got the reman'd axle from was no help at all but somehow a new axle fixed the issue... This was all with Honda parts and I have heard even worse stories about aftermarket axles. I tried the AAP option and they claim the same axle fits 04-08. This is total BS as the parts from Honda are NOT the same and the part didn't come close to fitting.

I had an axle replaced and the aftermarket crap that they put in popped out/loosened while driving leaking much of the transmission fluid out on highway. They replaced again and the same thing happened a few days later. They claimed that it was a "bad batch" of axles, but I could see on the invoice that they hadn't used an Acura part. Third time with Acura axle fixed the problem. Good luck....and be sure it is the Acura axle replacement if that is the issue.
