Broke the factory wheel lock key
Anyone have this problem? Went to rotate my tires and the locking lugnut wouldnt budge. Hit it a bit harder with the impact and it broke. The protruding part on the key broke. Same thing on one other wheel. When I tighen my wheels I use a torque wrench to about 100 ft lbs so I dont think I over torqued them.
Anyways the dealer said they would remove them for free with a "master key" if I got another set for 60 bucks. The design looks like shit, also they are mcgard locks, which arent 60 bucks. I ended up getting Gorilla locks, which I highly recomend. Ive used them before and you can order spare keys as well as replacements in the future. Only thing is now the stock lug nut wrench wont fit the locks so I have to carry a universal lugnut wrench. Oh well.
Oh also I found a master key also. I got a 19mm 12pt socket from the flea market for 2 bucks and hammered it on there with a sledge. Easy money.

^^^^ yup, over torqued... get ready for the possibility of warped rotors...

Yeah I pretty much just use 95 - 100 ft lbs for all my cars. The rotors were slightly warped when I got the car at 50,000 mi. Funny cause EVERY honda/acura ive ever worked on had warped rotors before 70,000mi. From a rice rocket Integra to my 60 yr old friends mom who babies her CR-V. All of them. Its either poor quality steel or the way the brakes are designed dont allow for good heat dissapation. All that aside Im pretty sure the heating and cooling cycles have way more to do with warping the rotors than lug nut torque.

I had the same problem. Bought car where roads got salted and over torqued lug nuts. Broke a couple studs and my key.
I have a complete set of OEM lug nuts and a new set of locks and key NEW in package. I went with ronjon wheels so I do not need the lugs anymore.
Keeping them for my waffles.
I had a mechanic use a bolt off set to get the other 3 wheel locks off and replaced broken studs.
Downside - my brake shield is cut and a couple lug studs were ground down to go on without removing hub assembly.

Another way to help get a stuck lug off is to heat it with a propane torch and then try to take it off, no torch you say drive on the hwy for a while to heat it up and then try. I had a shop get upset cause I took my car back for them to redo the alignment the tech over torqued my wheel locks and wheel locks and I broke the lug and key FML I had to hammer a socket onto all 4 locks and heat the other lugs to get them off. Good luck!!
