brakes grinding at low speeds.. ABS?

scenario: I would be braking ever so lightly coming to a traffic light and also taking advantage of the engine braking as well and a few feet from where I want to stop, it seems the ABS would go nuts and I would feel a grinding from the brake pedal at around 10-5mph.

I just thought these turanza tires sucked so much and slipped at low speeds on dry pavement and fooled the vsa to kick in, but after having a TSB for the car drifting done by the dealership, it has become much more pronounced.

now the only thing in that TSB involves rotating of tires and adjusting tie rods. so I can't see how that would affect the brakes negatively.

here's a link to the TSB: http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/B06-034.PDF

If it was your ABS activating, wouldn't it pulsate instead of "grind"?

- all 4 tires are the same Turanza EL42's that come stock.
- the car just his 6400 miles tonight, so no, I wouldn't think it was the brakepads -- I don't know if you've felt ABS kicking in but it's a combo of a grinding vibration plus pulsating through the pedal

have the dealer check the brakes again- if 6MT with brembo brakes, there is a tsb for noise on them- they install different pads with a chamfered edge

6400 miles there should be no issues with the car
When the ABS engages on a TL you know it- try it with some water on your street

Drive another car like yours at the dealer and see what it does

Have the dealer read the codes to see if any malfunction has been stored.
Either the ABS or VSA light come on when this occurs?

mine is a 5AT and no warning lights have come on. I definitely will bring this up when I go in to get an alignment.

As I come to a complete stop, I hear what sounds like a grinding noise. When barely rolling (stop and go traffic), the sound is there whenever I apply the brake. When I ease off the pedal to start moving, the grind noise is there. Acura put on new rotors and pads and the results are the same. Not sure what is going on here. Its kind of like when the brakes are wet and you press the pedal the first time as your pulling out of your drive way. Just a crazy grinding sound. The car seems to stop fine, just annoying noise to put up with.

try this pad bedding procedure
http://heeltoeauto.com/httech/YaBB.pl?num=1184261899

sometimes noises are from poor pad contact or pad transfer layer is not up to par
Both DIY by driving fixes wohoo!!!

noshow--- dont pay dealer price for a basic toe only alignment- thats all our cars can get unless you added camber kits becasue you dropped it 2 inches or more
Look for a private shop that has alignment as their main biz- 20 minutes and they are done

Pad bedding could be the problem, even though I did bed them using the method in that link. I guess I did not do it properly. we'll see what I can milk acura for it.

thanks for the concern for the alignment, however, I have no suspension mods and it will all be under warranty. it's part of the TSB that I shoved in their faces about the car pulling. I made sure they understood that was the 3rd time I was there.

that's funny, I get it only going up a slight incline such as going into a driveway at low speeds.

this problem has to be related somehow if u, me and inaccurate all have it. seems like the brake line is getting twisted somehow? when i go down the angled driveway i usually have the wheel turned.

u find out anything from the stealer?

It is not a rubbing issue. Believe me, the factory would not allow anything related to the brake system to rub. I have been under my TL too many times, and I can assure you that it is not anything rubbing.

My theory is that the ABS is being tricked into activating by the steering wheel being turned mixed with the uneven incline/decline road surface. Dare I say "we have a bug" in the software programming that is being tricked by this "tricky" situation of turning and braking concurrently while traveling over an uneven incline/decline.

The ABS is doing several self test when you start the car and first begin to drive- could this be the problem?

Not the self-check in my case. I experience the "tricked ABS" after the car has been driven 45 minutes, and I can reproduce it whenever I wish in the same driveway entrance (my local Super Walmart... ) Actually, now that I am aware of it, I get my braking completed before I go up the incline while turning... in this manner, I am not applying the brake while encountering the incline + turning.

I brought it to Montclair Acura Friday Morning and the pulling issue was "solved" be centering the steering wheel...... oh by the by. the car still pulls to the left. the alignment took them about 1.5 hours. RIDICULOUS. I was pissed and the manager will hear a mouthful.

as far as the braking issue, it "could not be reproduced" so after waiting 1.5 hours for an alignment, I was too fed up to take them for a test ride. I'm fed up with Acura service. back to old school self oil changes

Lurker and hopefully soon to be TL-S owner.
I had a similar problem in a 2005 Odyssey van where the brakes would grind loudly as the van slowed to zero. The grinding was much more likely to occur if the brakes were already hot. After much searching, we found a TSB on the problem.
