bizarre problem

while chasing NSX's up to Mt. Palomar this weekend I was driving with my VSA off as usual. Sometime along the way my ABS light and VSA light came on and once we reached the observatory I was no longer able to activate the VSA system. On the way back home I stopped at the dealer to see what was up.

They showed me how the front drivers side wheel speed sensor had been completely chewed up??? this sensor is bolted into the stearing knuckle and receives information from the wheel bearing as it spins alongside of it. It is in a sealed area. This dealer did not have the part and quoted me 570$ to fix it out of warranty. I said to button it back up and i was on my way.

I then stopped at my local dealer and explained to them what happened and checked availability of the part. They had the part and asked me to bring it back on Monday to investigate. Long story short they fixed the problem under warranty but were baffled as to how it happened. they pulled the axle and bearing thinking that they were going to be removing debris from the sensor but there was none. I am starting to think the first dealer cleared a simple malfunction code and then busted up my sensor? anyone else ever hear of this problem?
