belt chirp at idle...
i have noticed a slight chrip when at idle. this chirp seems to increase when i give it gas (in nuetral or park) what could this be? maybe i need to add lubrication to a belt?

you can try belt dressing as a quick fix, but if you car is having the same problem mine did, i had to have my crank shaft pulley replaced....if your out of warranty, i would start with belt lube, if that works but noise comes back, replace the belt itself...if that doesnt work, then the pulley is your problem...

thanks. this crank shaft pulley you speak of, is this a pricey fix? it looks like a huge PITA to replace aka not a DIY fix..............

With so few miles I would check your drive belt. Engage your A/C does the noise get louder?
Turn off your car. Check the Alternator and look around the pulley. Do you see any black soot around the housing?
Does the drivebelt look worn? Fell the ridges.. are the teeth sharp (pointy) or dull (flat)? Did you notice any power steering fluid that has leaked on your drivebelt?
Do you notice a chirp when you start the car and then fade away?
I'm hoping it's just your drivebelt but typically when a pulley is running rough on the drivebelt or if the drivebelt is crapping out it progressively gets worse and the noise is more like a loud squeal.
Next thing to do is remove your upper cover housing your timing belt. Inspect the timing belt and see if the ridges are damaged at all or if the belt is glazing..
If none of those pan out then I'd take it in and get tech's input.

A/C doesnt alter the noise. im going to inspect the drive belt and see if the auto-tensioner indicator is within the std range and check the belts for wear. this noise has been present for a little while but hasnt gotten any louder. would this be a drivetrain warranty issue (i know belts arent covered after 50K) but possibly the pulley will be?

In this economy who knows what they'll say.. well cross your fingers that it's just a cheap fix / drivebelt. If it is the CP, you might as well get a new t/b as well.. w/p and t/b tensioner idk.. at your miles I think you could wait.. that's a tough one.
It's not real difficult but definitely a weekend thing depending on your setup. Probably more trouble then your willing to invest in like CP holder, bad ass impact gun or 4ft+ breaker bar.. keep us updated

I doubt it's Drive Train.
I've got a little chirp as well - it's got a kind of rhythm that matches the engine speed. Only on cold morning start ups and goes away when warm. Not consistent. Something related to the drive belt and UR Pulley I think.
BTW - I though I read not to use belt dressing on the drive belt; something about the flat side running on the idler pulleys. Not sure on that and I don't have a reference.

Crank Pulley is not too hard to replace if you've got the right tools. Check this thread - Kennedy's post on page 1 and then my summary on the last page:

I'm having the same problem my self in my 05 w/ 31k. I acutally was messing around to day and the belt looks ok, teeth are a LITTLE flat. Now i did see a little bit of red gummy stuff around the bolt that holds the top pulley on. Did'nt really think much of it. All recalls have been done and i took it in about a month ago and tech's could'nt find anything wrong. It happens at idle and up around 1900-2000 rpms then stops...i'm taking it in again, i still have a warranty till sep.

Service Bulletin 08-031 deals with chirping noises. It's possible your timing belt needs to be replaced along with a shimmy kit installation on the pulley to stop it from tilting a bit. The bulletin covers all 05 to 07 TLs. The 07's also require a water pump replacement as well with this fix.

All depends on the dealership you go to. On a job like this I would say most dealerships wouldn't do the work for free although they are not losing much in the terms of profit on parts with the exception of the w/p.

after reading the service bulletin (08-031) it sounds as if THIS is my problem. if thats the case, looks like it will be a much more costly fix, according to the service bulletin. damn!

Hey JIMITHING, did the 08-031 service bulletin do the trick for you???
I just had 08-031 done on my TL (2005, 52K) but WITHOUT the water pump. Initially it was a chirping noise coming from the timing belt area and I heard it best at idle (0-1600 revs). Now, the chirping sound is pretty much gone. Instead I hear a bit of a mettalic sound/rumblin sound when I accelerate from stop (and sometimes when at idle). I am not able to recreate this sound consistently howerver.
1. Does anyone know if the w/pump needs replacing?
2. I have already been to the dealership once and am wondering if this back and forth part of the process. Can anyone comment?
3. What else could it be? What types of symptoms are common with the heat shield problems?
A note that below is the work that was done under warranty:
04148 RCA-305 - KIT TPR SHIM AC
14520 RCA-A01 - TENSIONER COMP
I really appreciate the input and advice!

I had the same problem with my 07 TL (12K miles ONLY!), everything was fixed under warranty few weeks ago, however I do believe some noise is still coming from "belt area". Will wait till warmer weather to bring car back to the shop.
