Question Balast or Ignitor Issue

My passenger side HID light quit working. It did not come back on so I assumed it was the bulb. Removed the bumper and swapped the bulb and it still did not work. Didn't have time to troubleshoot if it was the ignitor or the ballast.

Any suggestions on if its the ballast or the ignitor.

swap each side and find out. theres no way to tell based on your symptoms. for what its worth, i've seen more ballasts die than ignitors. but...that doesnt rule out anything.

Yup, no way to tell until you switch the ignitors or ballasts. I'd switch the ignitors as they're much easier to access.

Thats the next step. Now the light comes on when I turn switch on but if I turn off then back on it doesnt come back on. Just trying to troubleshoot based on what its doing until I can get bumper back off.

actually, to swap ignitors, it requires removing the ballasts...so might as well just swap the ballasts instead. saves you 1 extra step. gonna have to remove the headlight either way

I have a spare "universal" ballast, what would I need to do to be able to test it out?

YOu would need a 9006 input and pigtails you would connect directly to the battery's positive and negative terminals. Assuming the ballast has a D2S output, then plug in the bulb to confirm whether or not the bulb is working. If the "universal" ballast has AMP outputs, then you'll need an AMP to D2S adapter.

But by swapping the bulbs, you already concluded that the bulb isn't the culprit. The universal ballast doesn't have the same input as the OEM ballast nor does it have a similar ignitor so it doesn't help at all here :/ Looks like you can't squirm out of the hard way of testing here :/
