Check the charging system first. I don't know how you're diagnosing the alternator without verifying in fact that it's not supplying sufficient amount of charge to the battery. In regards to the alternator, it supplies power as needed, going higher is not an issue although overkill unless you have aftermarket accessories that would call for a larger load.

With the car running, disconnect your battery. If the car dies then your alternator is bad.

Bad idea, and bad idea for all the electronics. It worked on the pre computer cars, but with all the electronics, major damage can result if the car runs at all.

You can hook up a charging meter to check the charge on your battery and the load from your alternator. Any national part store should be able to test it for free or you can buy one for $15-20 and test it yourself. Make sure you test the alternator at full load - radio, A/C, headlights, wipers, etc.. on.

No! LOL. Not with modern cars. You can kill the computers and other electronics doing this. The batter acts as a capacitor and absorbs the "dirty" power coming from the alternator.

The first and easiest test is to put a volt meter on it with the engine off. It should be just above 12 volts. Start the car and it should go to 14v. If fails this test, the alternator is bad. If it passes the test, it could still be bad.

As Majofo said, no issues with going with a higher amperage unit as long as the wiring can withstand the full output assuming you have something that will actually use the full output.
