Alignment issues - problem - long sorry
Alignment issues - problem - long sorry
I have an '05 MT TL and have had a wierd aligment problem for some time and I am looking for any advise of if someone has had a similar problem that would be interesting.
started around 35k miles - around the same time as dealer replaced ONE front strut under warranty. prior to this I did not notice any trouble or unusual tire wear - dealer says its is not related??
replaced orig tires around 25k with some cheap off brand but they seemed ok for about two tire rotations - kinda fast wear but even, then suddenly the back tires both wore out on the inside right down to the tire threads in about 5k miles after a rotation, replaced tires and had NY Acura dealer do alignment.
after their alignment I noticed the car would hop to one side if i hit a bump on either the right or left side of the car so i figured it as not correct. tires were all wearing funny at next rotation, replaced two and went to an independent tire store. "hopping" issue still there - all tires ruined by next rotation and in fact scrubbing so much rubber off after a long trip the inside of the rims were covered with rubber dust - great so far huh?
so i visit my orig dealer in Jax - they find only one rear tire out and assure me they can fix so I put new michelins on and got aligned - three tire rotations later tires are wearing very good BUT...recent trip up north on rougher roads than here in Florida and car is still "hopping" like crazy and when I hit an ice patch with either the left or right side, the car would lurch - something is not right - dealer re-checked at around 90K miles and assured me all was OK - got about 105k right now.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
nate
ps - BG syn lube worked wonders on tranny shifting - wish I did it long ago...

it would help if you post the before and after readings on the alignment
Any chance your car is lowered? Inside edge wear especially on the rear may be camber
Cheap tires wear out fast
You could be in need of shocks- what has actually been checked by an alignment shop?
Could be several things would make it hop or wander

I would avoid anyplace that replaces ONE shock or ONE strut.
That is not something that anyone should ever do.
If the tires wear ok, its hard to think you have any alignment issues, but I think most places are clueless or dishonest about alignments.
If you look at the wheels carefully on level ground, and things seem right, same angles on the right and left side, things lineing up, no odd tire wear, I would not
worry about it.
If you worry anyway, you need to find a place that knows what they are doing and has good equipment, and knows how to use it.
You will need to pay these people so they are interested in making you happy, not just interested in getting you out of their shop.

the dealer replaces one shock when one shock is shown to be failed part. Its warranty and they only replace what is broken
In hi mileage situations I would agree that one new shock could cause the problem, in this case at 35k miles- there wasnt enough wear to make that big a differance
This car needs to go to a real alignment shop with Hunter laser alignment system
Find out if the car is bent or a rim is whacked or a control arm or..........

Sorry, but 35,000 miles is not new, or close to it.
The only reason someone would replace one shock or strut is to save money.
When I had a bilstien shock leak on my Jaguar after a month, they sent me 2 NEW shocks, not one, and they had less than 500 miles on them.
I had the car jacked up on one side for a week as I did other work, and think that is why the shock leaked.
Every shock manufacturer will say to ALWAYS replace shocks as a set, not just because they sell them.
What happens in 50,000 miles?
One shock will have 50,000 miles on it, the other 85,000!
Right now, one shock has 0 miles and the other has 35,000, that is not good...

there was a TSB on this, new rear bumpstops need to be installed in order to fix the uneven wear problems. Also a new set of tires is supposed to be given if the tread is within acceptable limits.
